Moir, Shirley Blanche, 92, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2017 in her home at Parkland at the Gardens in Halifax. Born in Halifax, Shirley was the eldest daughter of Ben and Lillian (Hill) Moir. After graduating from Acadia University with a BSC in Home Economics she pursued a Dietetic Internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, NJ graduating in 1947. She worked with distinction at Massachusetts General Hospital as a Dietician for eight years. She returned to Halifax in 1955 and enrolled in Maritime Business College, graduating in 1956. After working in several businesses, Shirley became active in the Nova Scotia Dietetic Association where she was employed as registrar for 15 years retiring with an award for her dedicated service. She was a member of the American Dietetic Association and a life member of the Canadian Dietetic Association. Shirley also became an astute investor over the years and remained quietly engaged until just a few years ago. She was a past member of the Mayflower Curling Club, the 20 Leaguers Bowling Club, and a long time active member of Ashburn Golf Club where she served in many volunteer capacities including President of the Ladies Division. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of St. David’s. Shirley was a central figure in the lives of a large extended family. Our matriarch, she was always interested and always paying attention to the various journeys of each family member. She enjoyed many long friendships and followed each closely through the years never missing a birthday or special occasion of anyone. Known far and wide as ‘Aunt Shirley’ to the staff and friends of her extended family, she was a delightful and gracious lady to all she encountered. Shirley was predeceased by her twin sisters Barbara Sawyer and Betty Dexter, and brother-in-law Dr. Earl Dexter, and her nephew Keith’s wife, Susan . She is survived by her nieces Lynn (Paul Bezanson) Sawyer, Shirley (Ken) Mercer, Christine Dexter, and nephews David (Marlene), Richard (Mary) and Keith Dexter as well as grandnieces and nephews Steven (Julia), James (Carla), Jennifer (Joe), Lauren, Emily, Ben, Ted, Kelsey, Keith, Jamie, Ashley and Brandi; and great-grand nieces and nephews Oscar, Max, Phoenix, Madeleine, Charlie, and Dexter . Shirley will be remembered fondly by all of us including her close friend of many years, Margaret Teasdale. The family wishes to thank the staff at Parkland at the Gardens for their gracious care of Shirley, and her friends at St David’s for their visits and attentions. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Presbyterian Church of St. David’s or the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation. Funeral service to be held Monday October 23, 2017 at 2:00 at JA Snow Funeral Home, the Rev. Kenneth Stright officiating, reception to follow. Private family burial please.
