It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Shirley Sampson, beloved wife of the late Roy Sampson, on Saturday June 4, 2022 at the Halifax Infirmary. One of three children, she was born in Halifax to Agnes Bonang and Robert Creighton. She attended College Street School and went on to work at Sears until she and dad got married in 1952, a union that lasted 70 years.
Mom had a great sense of humour and loved to entertain and dance. They spent many evenings as young newlyweds dancing to the big bands in downtown Halifax and later, hosting gatherings at their home. Known for her excellent cooking, her recipes were sought after, especially her signature carrot cake. She was always making sure there was enough food prepared for unexpected visitors, and camping trips were no exception where you would often find a full boiled dinner simmering on the Coleman stove. Although she was happiest at home once her family was grown, mom loved her road trips to PEI and the USA with dad. She also enjoyed several tropical vacations with her family.
She was a strong, wise, and supportive mother and a loyal friend that you could talk to about anything. As a result, mom enjoyed an especially close relationship with her 3 children and her grandchildren, a bond that lasted to the very end. Her faith was unwavering, and she took great comfort in attending Mass in person and more recently, on-line.
She was predeceased by her sister, Etta Furlotte and brother Verdon Creighton and her husband, the love of her life, Roy Sampson. Left to mourn are her loving children, Greg (Marian), David (Shirley) and Judy Bishop (Richard), grandchildren Jonathan (Juli), Tristan (Natasha) Elise, Alex and Alison (Neils) and great- grandchildren.
We take great comfort knowing that mom and dad have been reunited after less than just three months apart. Arrangements are under the care of JA Snow Funeral Home, Halifax. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ignatius in Bedford on June 16, 2022 at 12:15pm with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Kidney Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
