I found Terry’s obituary today when my  e-card did not send.
I was one of the Seton choir members when he conducted this choir.
Terry helped me ease back into singing after I retired in Nova Scotia. I am so grateful for his excellent music skills and  his and Stephanie’s friendship over the years. They were a wonderful couple.

Thank you so much for having Terry’s memorial service livestreamed.  I was glad to be there in spirit through the livestream.  (Unfortunately, I couldn’t really hear the choir and I missed his quotes due to a glitch in the feed, but I heard and saw the rest. ) 

I feel really fortunate to have known Terry through the Jubilate Singers.  I learned a great deal about conducting a choir from him.  I loved that he gave eveyone a chance to audition for the solos, and found ways to include everyone through duets and small combos.  I loved his sense of humour.  He always made me feel appreciated even when I invariably arrived late for rehearsals (driving in from Amherst).  I love that he looked forward to leading our choir and that he composed arrangements for some of the pieces we did.  He introduced us to new pieces that have become choir favourites such as the one about the Lunenburg oxen, and a lively one where we wore cowboy hats.  My sincere condolences to his family.  I am glad to have known him and will miss him.

Uncle Terry you lived a long way away from us but it was always good fun when we met up with you. I loved how you and Uncle Brian were the only people who spotted the error in my speech at my brother’s wedding! “Treat others with compassion” (not “passion”, as I said!)
We will miss your sense of humour and your great laugh, which seemed to reverberate through your shoulders.  Thank you for taking them time to send presents to us every Christmas and to Hannah in more recent years.  We will miss you. Rest in peace, love Andrew, Claire and Hannah xxx

My sincerest condolences.  Terry was a co-founder and inspiring leader of our Nova Voce Men’s choir where I was a proud 1st tenor for over 11 years(an original).   A true gentleman.

I first met Terry when he founded  the Halifax  Boys honor choir and I was asked to be the accompanist. I was so impressed with his musicality and how he was able to achieve such a high standard of choral sound. A few years later, I was honored to be accompanist for Jubilate and Nova Voce.  I always found him to be very inspiring and encouraging, and so enjoyed his sense of humor.   At one of the concerts. I picked up his coat, thinking it was mine as the color was the same.  I realized the error of my  ways when I heard his voice saying  “Where is my coat?”   He always reminded me every now and again that he would be keeping an eye on his coat from now on

He has left such a wonderful legacy through his conducting, teaching, and composing. So thankful I was able to work with him for so many years.

Terry was a kind and loving brother-in-law to me for over 61 years.
 I remember happy holidays in Canada with him and Stephanie especially those at Christmas time when I often attended carol concerts he arranged and conducted . Also enjoyed were holidays they spent with us in England and more recently in Spain.
I shall particularly miss our weekly video conversations on Skype which I had with Terry and Stephanie for several years and continued with Terry after Stephanie's death. He would often show me his recent paintings during these conversations . I shall also miss the memories we shared.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Terry’s passing and extend my heartfelt sympathy to Kathryn, Alan, and the extended Hurrell family.

I first met Terry as the accompanist for the Seton Cantata Choir, and from the start, he was more than a colleague—he was a friend and mentor. What a joy and honour it was to work under his direction. Terry was a skilled conductor, composer, and musician, but it was his unique blend of professionalism, warmth, and humour that set him apart. Rehearsals were always lively, with his dry wit and a twinkle in his eye.

I will always cherish memories of our Cabaret Nights with the Seton Cantata Choir, where Terry would sing Gilbert and Sullivan. His love for fun and acting was contagious, and he brought so much joy to our group.

Terry’s contributions to the Nova Scotia music community were profound. He founded the Halifax Boys Honour Choir (HBHC) in 1985, and I’ve been proud to continue as its conductor since 1998. The boys still wear the red ties he introduced, a lasting symbol of his dedication. For years, the HBHC has had the privilege of performing with Nova Voce, the provincial men’s choir Terry also founded. His positive spirit always made the HBHC choristers strive to give their best.

I will miss his thoughtful notes of encouragement after each performance, which were both uplifting and motivating. The last time Terry heard the boys choir was on March 31st, during Carmina Burana. I am grateful he was there, and I’ll forever cherish those memories of him and Stephanie at our performances.

Though Terry is no longer with us, his legacy of kindness, leadership, and passion for music will continue to inspire. He and Stephanie will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Dear Kathryn, Alan, and Ada Rose -

We extend to you our deepest sympathy on behalf of both ourselves personally and the Jubilate Singers.

We wish we could be there in person for Terry's celebration of life, but unfortunately we are away on a previously planned vacation. However, several members of Jubilate will be present and we will be there in spirit.

Terry was a big part of our Jubilate Singers family and a good friend to us, encouraging us in our efforts with Jubilate for over twenty years.

Terry had a tremendous impact on those who encountered him and he will be deeply missed

I shall always remember my cousin Terry with special affection. He came as a newly-qualified teacher to Wroughton Junior School in Gorleston when  I was aged 10, and in my final year. It felt special to have such a grand connection! But I was reminded that I had always to refer to him in school as "Mr Hurrell". Naturally he played piano for the choir. Over many years I came to realise what a very kind, talented, and well-respected person Terry was, and just how much his love of music and singing brought joy to others. A particular memory is when he and his brother Brian played alongside one another, I believe it was on piano and organ, at the funeral in Great Yarmouth of their mother (my aunt Molly). It was touching to see such fine sons performing that role together. I will miss Terry's newsy Christmas letters, and the occasional emails we shared with amusing memories of "the old country".

Memories of Terry are always framed by his big round smiling face, often chuckling, and his rye sense of humour.  Not to mention his wonderful musical talents. 
I’ve fond memories of becoming a teenager whilst visiting Terry, Stephanie & Kathryn in Nova Scotia, with my family (Dad was Terry’s older brother). 
A traditional part of our Christmases was the race to see who would ring each other first. He invariably won!  Always a lovely catch up. 
He was a very proud father to Kathryn and grandfather to Ada Rose, our thoughts are with them. 
We will miss him.

Fond memories of a dear big bother.  He had a great sense of humour and enjoyed life to the full.  Apart from the wonderful pictures he painted and exhibited, we were surprised to see just how many choirs he had started or been involved with.  Music and singing really were his forte.

In the 1970's or 80's we remember our mum visiting Terry and Stephanie to see him perform in Fiddler on the Roof.  He played Tevye, the lead role.  Mum was so proud she saw every performance.  Coincidentally there is a performance at the Theatre Royal, Norwich in August.  My sister,  Janice and I are going to see it to remember Terry.

My deepest condolences. Terry was a truly gifted musician and I had the privilege of singing under his Direction with the Jubilate choir for many years. I will always remember his compassion when my husband passed away.  May you find comfort in knowing others share in your grief.

We have fond memories of Terry especially when he joined Dad (his brother Brian) playing duets on the piano and accordion when they managed to meet up. A real musical talent who will be greatly missed by so many.

Terry had a real love of life and always took a keen interest in his family and friends. The loss of his adoring wife Stephanie was tough after they had spent 60 + years together. It was very special to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with both of them on a family Teams call just last year and their 50th anniversary party back in Great Yarmouth.

We were always grateful for their thoughtfulness in remembering and sending birthday and Christmas cards and presents to Annabel. We always enjoyed Terry’s Christmas round-ups.

We will miss them both.

I’ll always remember your infectious laugh,  cheerful character and great stories.  Although you lived a long way away from us, it was always lovely to catch up with you and Stephanie and you were always so kind to send a card and gifts for our children’s birthdays and at Christmas. 
Now you are at peace and we’ll keep lots of lovely memories.

Terry had the life force; throughout  health challenges over the years, his musical genius continued to provide inspiration to hundeds of singers throughout Nova Scotia.
 Long after he had officially retired, he continued to create, compose and conduct music, to the delight of many audiences. I was fortunate enough to be part of the Jubilate Singers which he coducted, producing an annual concert fundraiser to feed  in the North End of Halifax each Christmas Season. 
Along with his musical activities, Terry somehow found  time to pursue his lifelong love of painting,  joining and actively contributing to more than one art society. 
It was his participation in the weekly Studio Group of the Dartmouth Visual Art Society where I first met Terry.  He often sang as he painted and some of his fellow painters joined in! It was he who encouraged me to join the Jubilate Choir, for which I shall be eternally grateful, enjoying  many seasons of the joyful Jubilate experience. 
He continued to conduct those concerts until he could no longer stand without support, but guess what? Even when he moved into the Berkeley after his dear wife Stephanie passed away last year, Terry continued  painting and sharing his musical expertise, organising a talent show, and a weekly choir group for his fellow Berkeley residents.
He touched so many lives, brought so much joy to everyone he met.  In addition to his musical heritage, he will be remembered for his sharp wit, kindness and generous spirit. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Terry was such a friendly man.  We had numerous discussions re paintings we we were working on. He did realism & I did abstract.

I’m terribly sorry to hear that my friend , from Contemporary Art Society has passed away. I got to know Terry and Stephanie quite well, especially when we had art shows. He was a great and hard working member of our group, taking on special duties when required. I was thinking about him this morning and planned to call him soon. He is now with Stephanie.

All my love and condolences to the Hurrell family. Terry was one of the best mentors, friends, and partners I've ever had.  A consummate showman, he taught me that there's never a wrong time to cater to your audience. In all things, Terry led with love, optimism, positivity and sensitivity.  I will be forever grateful to Terry and Stephanie for the joy, love and music they brought to my life.

Mr Hurrell was my elementary school music teacher and the director of the Halifax Boys Honour Choir while I was a member. He instilled in me a deep love for music. I was lucky enough to reconnect with him briefly a few years ago when he attended a Boys Honour Choir performance at which my son was performing. He was a lovely man.
