Terry was born September 8, 1949 in Kingston, Ontario, the 4th of eight children to Ken and Marion Keyes. Growing up on the St. Lawrence River, Terry first discovered athletics while paddling for the Gananoque Canoe Club. Terry excelled at several sports, winning Gold medals as a paddler and several championships as a football player. Most outstanding was being selected as the recipient of The Achievement Award presented by the Government of Ontario in recognition of distinguished performance in the field of amateur sport.
After completing High School, Terry headed East to attend Saint Mary’s University in Halifax where he obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree. It would be at Saint Mary’s where he met his loving wife, Elaine (Chernin) Keyes of 50 years.
Terry, a self-made man, opened his own Insurance Brokerage in Halifax in 1980. Terry always treated the customers of Keyes Insurance with care and compassion as he did his family and friends. As his success grew, so did his passion for golf. He could be found at Ashburn Golf Club on any day that ended in a ‘y’ spending time with his closest friends. His other love was taking his granddaughters for afternoon drives in his convertible for a piece of peach or butterscotch pie.
Terry is survived by his wife, Elaine Keyes; son Justin (Mai) Tokyo, Shaun (Erin) Halifax; sister, Nancy Gollogly (Wayne), brothers Michael, (Beverley), Joseph, (Mary Lynne), Kevin (Sherry), and Bruce (Dee Dee); grandchildren, Julia, Lorenzo, Laura, Maximillian, May, and Elizabeth, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sisters, Patty and Christie.
