Born on June 6, 1939 in Halifax, N.S. to Thomas and Emmeline (nee Sampson) McDonald. He was a man of great faith, and member of St. Agnes Catholic Parish. Tommy worked for his father, learning the trade of masonry, until he reached the age of 18 years old, when he would begin a journey leading to a successful career at the Halifax Herald Limited for the following 37 years. He held much respect and gratitude to Mr. G. W. Dennis for the opportunity given him to launch and run Standard Advertising; a labor of love, he worked tirelessly, fulfilling his commitment.
Tommy came from humble beginnings but believed opportunity was obtained by believing in yourself, and having the courage and commitment to make it happen. Despite this, he also recognized that we may need help, and at any opportunity he could, he would do for another. He was fair, and taught the importance of fairness and the folly in judging others. Tommy took his role as father with pride and conviction; always a watchful eye, and a great love. He let those he loved go far enough to learn and grow. D’Escousse, Isle Madame, Cape Breton, his family's home, was where his girls vacationed as young children and knew the meaning of freedom; his son had the other end of the province in Digby, N.S. where at the Mountain Gap, was given that same gift. His heart was in his family, his other love, the country; especially in D’Escousse, where as a young boy he would roam free in that majestic seaside community.
Left behind to mourn him are: the love of his life, wife Margaret Rose (St. Clair); daughters, Wendy Soulis (Steve); Carol-Anne McDonald (Greg Blanchard); Jackie McDonald (Jack Tufts); son Jason McDonald (Jill), all of Halifax, N.S.; grandchildren Sarah, Nicholas, Emma, Tori, Elizabeth, Rowan, Dylan; great-grandchildren Sawyer, Isabella, Isaac; and extended family. Tommy was predeceased by all his siblings Marjorie, Patrick, Audrey and Carole Anne. We wish to thank Tommy’s physician Dr. H. Mishra, The Red Cross, Palliative Team, VONs, family, friends for calls, visits, messages of hope and acts of compassion with special thanks to Ed Kehoe.
A very special thank you to Tommy’s Goddaughter and niece, Marjorie Kathleen McDonald, who gave of herself these past months to be with Tommy, helping him and his family through to our beloved's end. Angels walk among us ~ May God Bless you all!
