With heavy hearts, the Richardson family mourns the peaceful passing of Thomas Ernest Richardson, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather at Camp Hill Memorial Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia on January 23rd, 2025, two days short of his 95th birthday.
He is survived by his wife Patricia (MacGregor), his children Tyler (Alexis Carr), Susan (David Green), George (Kelley), Sarah (Mark Collins), grandchildren Jessica Richardson, Brett Richardson (Lauren), Katie Richardson (Travis), Laura Schinbein (Dustin), Sydney Richardson-Carr (David), Hannah and Sam Richardson, Jack and Sierra Collins and seven great-grandchildren. Tom was predeceased by his first wife, Paula (Schurman), his parents Tom and Eliza (Treasure) of England, and his five sisters, Kathleen, Vera, Grace, Pat and Dorothy.
The story told in the then-small town of Whitby, Ontario in 1930, was the fire engine toured the town announcing the happy news... "Mrs. Richardson finally delivered a son”. After graduating from high school, Tom joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and flew as a Flight Lieutenant radio-navigator on the 426 Squadron including service on the Korean airlift during the Korean War. He later graduated from the University of New Brunswick with top honors of his class, completing a BSc. in Electrical Engineering.
Tom spent three decades practising engineering, establishing his own company, Richardson Associates on Prince Edward Island. He gained a reputation for diligence, integrity and professional competence. Tom served a term as President of Engineers PEI and as President of Charlottetown's oldest Rotary Club, which subsequently presented to him the Paul Harris Fellowship award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to his community. Tom was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Engineering degree by the Technical University of Nova Scotia on the of the 100th anniversary of professional engineering in Canada. He also spent several years working at Tropicana.
Tom loved his family. When it came to amusing his children and grandchildren, he was a part time family poet and song writer (“The Borden Train”), always with a mischievous grin and those sparkling blue eyes.
With his beloved Patricia by his side for 58 years, Tom lived an active, fulfilling lifestyle. A former ski instructor, Tom enjoyed Brookvale, Big Moose Mountain, Sugarloaf and White Mountain, skiing together with Pat into their 80’s. He loved wintering in their condo in Sarasota, Florida: golf, tennis, sunset picnics on Siesta Key beach with friends, cruises to the Caribbean, favorite restaurants and entertaining. Tom treasured his summers on Prince Edward Island, playing mixed golf, golf with the guys, cocktails, boating, running his John Deere, and enjoying quiet moments with Coco the dog; but most of all, it was visits from his growing family that were dearest to his heart.
Tom’s calm and kind essence will be remembered by his loving family.
At Tom’s request, there will be no visitation, nor funeral service.
