It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Volker Metz. Son of Heinrich Metz and Augusta (‘Gustel’) Kreiger, youngest brother of Hildegard, Heinz Gunter and Hans Dieter, Volker sadly passed away on the 27th of February 2025.
In the early 1960s Volker emigrated from Germany, as a qualified Electrical Engineer, arriving at Digby N.S., where he set up home, and gained employment initially as a television repair man. It was this technical ability which later landed him employment with the Atlantic Shipping company, working on the modification and repair of ship radars. It was this skill that drew the attention of his next employer – Teleglobe Canada, where, in the early 1970s he started work firstly, at the Mill Village and consequently the Lake Cowichan Earth Stations. In the early 1980s, fresh opportunities presented themselves in the form of a new job at the recently incorporated INMARSAT, as a kind of glorified Air Traffic controller, but rather for satellites and shipping.
Volker loved music – principally the Viola. Having learned on a second hand Violin gifted to him by a neighbor in the 1950s right up until his final years in the 2020s, Volker played the slightly larger Viola in wide variety of musical ensembles, playing not just for his own pleasure , but for that of his fellow musicians and thousands and thousands of concert and theatre goers across North America and Europe. He could also bust out a wicked ditty on the mouth organ when the fancy took him !
Volker also loved the Great Outdoors. Whether it took the form of a manicured garden, replete with Roses, Fuchsias or Geraniums; a love of animals – his beloved dogs; the relentless trudges in all weathers and terrain he called ‘walks’; or the out-the-way places he chose to live in the latter part of his life, Mother Nature’s glory always abounded in his heart, as the beloved memory of Volker will always abound in ours.
Volker is survived by his loving wife Rosemary, his brother Hans Dieter, and his four children Tom, Julia, Andrew and Christopher, in addition to his eight wonderful grandchildren and four great grandchildren
The family would like to thank the staff of the Abbie Lane Hospital of Halifax N.S. for their kindness and compassion to Volker in his final days. Any donations in Volker’s memory are welcome, and should be made to Parkinson Canada, or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
