

Winifred Mary(Waddell) Milne. In her 101st year. Born Nov. 20, 1925 New York, U.S.A.. Died Feb 4, 2026 at Palliative Care Unit VGH, Halifax, N.S.. Predeceased by parents Dr. and Mrs. Alfred Waddell, Sister Sylvia Bell, Brothers Joseph and Fred Waddell. Dear Mother of Shelley, Linda and Dr. Ronald Milne, all of Halifax.
Beloved Grandmother of Tony Barnaby(Toronto, ON.), Peter Milne (Halifax, N.S.), and Dr. Andrea Milne(Brian Kozanecki, Windsor, ON.). Great Grandmother to Jack and Millie Kozanecki. Beloved Aunt to many nieces and nephews, and cousins in Trinidad, U.S.A., Switzerland and Venezuela.
Winnie lived in New York and Trinidad in her early years. The family emigrated to Halifax in 1933 where her Father Alfred Waddell was a well known and respected Family Physician. She attended St. Pat's High School and Dalhousie where she obtained an honours B.A. and later an M.S.W. from the Maritime School of Social work.
She was Director of Social Services at the N.S. Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1998. She was very well respected in the Profession and contributed much in the field of Mental Health both provincially and nationally.
Winnie was Past President of the Nova Scotia branch of the Red Cross provincially and received national recognition for her work with the organization. She worked locally as well as doing disaster flood relief work in the U.S.A.
She received many awards and recognition for her Humanitarian work, including Queen's Golden Jubilee Award and N.S. Human Rights Commission award.
Winnie had a strong Catholic faith and was active in St. Agnes Parish, including as chair of the Refugee Committee which was successful in supporting refugees from Kosovo and others. She was a strong advocate for Multiculturalism and the rights of the less privileged in society, especially in the field of Mental health.
She had a special love for her West Indian roots having lived in Trinidad as a child. She enjoyed the family, food culture , music and humour of the Caribbean on many trips to Trinidad, Tobago and Venezuela. In addition, she remembered fondly her travels to Asia, Paris, Switzerland, the Holy Land and Central America.
Winnie had a great love of family and generously shared her wisdom, empathy and love (not to mention her sharp sense of humour !) with family and friends alike. She will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all those she touched.
