Robert Monroe and Dorothy Mae Powell in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He
was the second of their four boys. John was baptized as one of
Jehovah’s Witnesses at the “Peace on Earth” District Convention on
July 18, 1969. He married his wife Gail, his “Sugar Bear”, on
February 7, 1970 and they remained happily married for over 47
years.
John will be remembered for his love of the outdoors. He
appreciated Jehovah’s wonderful creation and loved to camp, ride
and hunt. His favorite scripture was Proverbs 17:17, “A true friend
shows love at all times, And is a brother who is born for times of
distress.” He did his best to be a good friend to others and
treasured the friends he made in Jehovah’s organization, especially
that of his best friend of over 40 years, Art Browne. Along the way
he had several spiritual mentors, including Warren Johnson who
helped him develop his public reading and speaking skills. John
enjoyed volunteering at conventions and assisted in the welding
department during the construction of the Mira Loma Assembly
Hall. Attending the dedication was a privilege he always treasured.
It touched John’s heart and made him so proud that both of his
children grew up to serve Jehovah and married mates that shared
their love of Jehovah.
John is survived by wife Gail Powell, his son, John Powell
and his wife Jamie, and his daughter, Chrystal Gaitan and her
husband Chris and his beloved granddaughter Mackenzie Powell.
Also, survived by his brothers, Jim Powell and his wife Becky, Bob
Powell and his wife Voni, Mike Powell and his wife Katrina, as well
as many other family members and friends.
