It is with immense sadness that we mourn the passing of Charlotte Berch. The second child of three born to Sally and Nathan Wacher and the first person in her family born in this country. She adored her brother, Wolfe and sister, Alice, both of whom predeceased her and whom she missed terribly over the years. Her younger years revolved around her friends, family and neighbors on Pulaski Street with many of her childhood friends remaining connected to her throughout her life. Thanks to one of those friends, she was introduced to the love of life, George Berch in 1956. They married in 1957.
Along with George, Charlotte was the proud owner of The Yarn Barn in East Rockaway and her talents with knitting needles and crochet hooks were legendary. She was also the office manager for Emunah Women of America for many years. She did a great deal of volunteer work over the years including for St. Francis Hospital and Hadassah. She was a long time board member and committee member for Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre as well as the editor of the Temple's magazine, Hakol, for many years.
She was feisty, clever, humorous and tough as can be. She was a fierce friend and strong advocate for others. She adored her family, especially her husband of 55 years, George, who she has missed terribly this past year. She was so proud of her three children Neil, Susan and Alan and relished their strength and independence. She loved her two daughters-in-laws, Betsy and Dara. Her grandchildren Anna, Adam, Isabel and Addison, were the light of her life. A visit from them always brighten up her day and given half a chance, she would proudly tell you about their latest accomplishments.
Charlotte lived life on her own terms from start to finish. She will be missed tremendously.
