I am thankful that you lived.   For you to be the patriarch of our family.  For what you taught me and what you continue to inspire me to be.  Thank you for being so loving while I spent my whole life looking up to you.  I miss you. 

I miss you.  I cry a lot still.  One day I will write something worthy of what you meant to me.  I’m not close yet.  

I knew Lou professionally and have to say he was the most compassionate, thorough, intelligent, and even funny lawyer I have ever worked with. I found out he had passed while testifying this morning and can only express my sadness at the loss of this wonderful man.

Hi Uncle Lew,

It's hard to say goodbye. I really don't want to. I keep crying when I remember all the little moments we had. How much of you etched onto me, without me even knowing it. Your love of movies became my love of movies, which turned into my career and passion. I don't make movies for the money or fame; I truly believe stories have the power to change the world for good. A belief I know we both shared. After all, you told the best stories. I get sad a lot, but I hear this might get easier with time. I know how much you loved your family, I know how much you loved me. But it still hurts to know I can't hug that love anymore. It's hard to imagine a world without your spark. So I'll keep it with me, I'll keep you with me Uncle Lew. I'm grateful for our time together. I'm one of the lucky few who knew you my entire life. And yet, somehow 35 years doesn’t feel like enough. 

There are two things I know to be true: Frank Pepe’s of New Haven has the best pizza, and I love you Uncle Lew.

To know Lew was to absolutely love and respect him with all your heart. Lew was an incredible mentor to me and my husband, Tony. He always gave us the best advice, both in life and in business. Lew was simply an awesome guy. He and Margaret treated me with love and kindness, and always made time to talk to me, no matter how busy they were in the office. Lew, I will miss hearing your stories, especially the one about "the most expensive martini you'll ever have in Manhattan."  May you rest in eternal peace. 

My condolences to the family. Lew was absolutely one of a kind and I feel honored to have worked closely with him for several years. He always had a story  to tell or a piece of advice to share. There was no such thing as a quick phone call with Lew and never any going through the motions with work. I am grateful for all the hours of stories and grateful that my son had a chance to meet Lew the last time we were in Florida a few years ago. He will be greatly missed.

My sincerest condolences to the family of this wonderful man.  A gentle giant in a business where anxiety typically rules the room.  Lou’s steady demeanor had a way of bringing order not only to the issue at hand, but also to people around him.  I’ve practiced workers compensation since 1987 and I can affirmatively state in that time, I never once saw Lew angry.  He was blessed with a wonderful family and was so proud of his children.  Always talking about them and about all of the fantastic places traveled to together with his wife.  Over the last 10 years, Lew was an integral part of my practice.  When I needed help, Lew was there.  What started out as just seeking his assistance from time to time grew to be a regular circumstance. Lew did my depositions, appeals and rebuttals.  And he did them magnificently.  Lew also brought order to what he called “the deposition process”.   He'd commence a doctor’s deposition by thanking them for attending.  Lew was a master at his craft and fully enjoyed what he did.  I had a genuine affection for the man. He knew my father was a pattern maker in the garment district in NYC , which had meaning to Lew.  It is how my friendship and mentoring began with him.  I will miss him dearly, and am glad  he did not suffer long.  I had an opportunity to speak with him shortly before he passed away.  He took my call while in the hospital conferencing with physicians.  The last thing he said to me was “I love you kid”.   I love you too, Uncle Lew.     

What can I say about Lew? 27 years ago, Lew  had me shaking in my shoes when I had to face him in court. I learned quickly that Lew had a huge heart, lived a huge life and told huge stories.  I loved hearing about the adventures with his beloved Margret. I truly believe they were meant for each other. He was so proud of his children and their accomplishments. I actually got to chat with him more often in the last few years as we would confer on depos that we both handled for PTZ.  Interspersed with work,  were the  insights into his family and the joy they brought to him. He will be greatly missed and my heart aches for those who grieve him so deeply, and there are many.  I take solace that he viewed every day as a gift and that he lived life fully. 

It’s very sad to hear of Lew’s passing. I met Lew as a youngish associate at the JTBFFH firm and he became an important influence. He kept the mood light during hectic days at the Brooklyn WCB,and also in his later career handling depositions. He will be missed.

Lew was like a second father to me. Ever since the first day I met him in 2008 and he hired me on the spot. We worked together in a tiny corner office in David’s bldg in Miami. I’ll never forget that place. Lew took me in and taught me everything I know from the ground up. I was just recently married and was eager to hit the ground running. We worked tirelessly nights on end, but I am so grateful for all of those long days with him and getting to know him. 

He brought my husband and I to New York for a wedding and little did he know that this business trip would end up with the birth of our first little girl. He would always say, “I bring Katie to New York and she comes back pregnant!” 

I remember his days when he was attending hearings in court, he always loved those days and rejoiced each time he won for his injured clients. He worked effortlessly every single day, even on weekends, on cruises, halfway around the world. He continued to work to keep his mind going, but also to keep me going. We were a great team!! The most amazing man I know. 

He could always tell when something was bothering me. He could hear it in my voice. He just always knew me. Like a father would. And I appreciated that so much. I spent more time with Lew than I did with anyone else. 

He always took care of me, even when I didn’t know that I needed it.  I miss his calls. His endless calls. Always wanted to know “anything else”. 

I miss his FaceTimes where I am looking directly at his shirt or the top of his head. That full head of hair!!!! 

Lew was truly my guiding light in life. I miss him terribly and am so broken. My prayers go out to his family, longtime friends and loved ones. We all lost a great one. May he RIP with a martini and olives in hand! 

I was so lucky to have landed a job 20 years ago at Lews firm. He was the first person to greet me on my first day back in 2003. He was a mentor and like a father figure to me .  No one, and I mean no one cross examined a doctor like Lew. I would get so many chuckles from reading his transcripts. He loved his family , kids , Margaret, his boat and traveling. I loved hearing all of his stories over the years. If anyone ever messed w me as a new attorney Lew ALWAYS had my back. Recently when he was on a cruise and had to quarantine I was worried about him and texted him. He immediately FaceTimed me from the water in I think Greece and we shared some laughs. I took a screen shot of it and keep looking at it. I am so thankful I got to tell him I loved him 2 weeks ago. He was such a fierce advocate and our industry was so very lucky to have him fighting for us. I will miss seeing the name Lew Heller pop up my phone so very much.

I would like to send my condolences for your loss. I knew Lew as a colleague from work. Lew was always a strong advocate for his clients and a gentleman to all who sat across from him. Lew will be missed by all of us in the Workers’ Compensation field as he was a true legend. 

My sincere condolences to Margaret, and their children. I had worked with Lew since I started court reporting back in 2008.  I worked with him daily on phone depositions, and although we never met in-person, I felt like Lew was a friend of mine.  Every time I would get on the conference line, Lew would be incredibly warm, kind, and so profoundly good at his job. When I started in the workers' comp field, I was extremely nervous.  Any time I worked with Lew he put my nerves at ease, and he has taught me so much during the process.  He helped me become the confident court reporter I am today.  Although as time went on we worked less together, every time I did have a deposition with him he would announce me as "Nicole THEE court reporter" as a little inside joke.  I will miss working with him dearly.  Margaret, although you don't know me, I feel like I know you;  Lew told me so much about you and your lives together.  He loved to travel with you, to skii, and to go on your walks.  That's how much he spoke of you.  And your accomplished children.  He was incredibly proud.  Lew was a sweetheart of a man.  The world has lost an incredible soul.  

Beyond his personal and professional achievements, my father-in-law loved to sail. He knew that to move forward, you need the wind at your back, and that is what he was for my family. With pride and love, he encouraged and supported us so we could look ahead and go on life’s adventure to find happiness and success. Rest assured Commodore Lew, your armada is sailing. 

Lew Heller probably had a major effect on  the lives of thousands of injured workers over his career representing them and their families in the field of Workers’ Compensation
He was an inspiration to me and countless other lawyers who benefited from his expertise and compassion

Dear Margaret and Family,

Lew was a special part of our lives.  He always had such a positive and optimistic view of life and truly enjoyed spending time with people and making new friends.  Lew had strong values and moral character and he always showed concern and compassion for others.  We enjoyed traveling with both of you and have very warm memories of our time together.  Lew would always say "There  are no bad days on Seabourn."  Our many adventures together have been our fondest memories that we will cherish.  We always loved our traditional toast of "L'Chaim!"  We admired Lew's military service to our country and his legal services for First Responders. Your marriage was an inspiration to all, and it was always evident how much you loved each other.

We will greatly miss Lew and will remember him always.

A true mensch, he taught me lessons about practicing law that I carry with me to this day.  I knew him as a mentor, a colleague, and eventually as a formidable adversary. To the Heller family, immediate and extended, please accept my heartfelt condolences. I had the pleasure of knowing Lew over the past 15 years as a fellow New York Workers Compensation attorney. At times he was a noble and respected adversary. At times he and I worked together  as colleagues. He was always as a mentor and friend. Lew was a key component in me being accepted as a Fellow in the Workers Compensation College of Lawyers. Lew was always kind to me. I always looked forward to the next case I had against or with Lew. He was a devoted husband and such a loving and proud father. The premier importance of his family was what always impressed me most about Lew. The practice of law and establishing  a legacy firm is stressful, competitive and, if you let it, all consuming. Lew worked hard. He did his job with competence and class. I will miss my friend. Thanks for all you did for me, Lee Rest well and in peace. 

Lew was a force to be reckoned with.  I will always value the friendship we had which started when I was a young law student who began her career at Lew's firm.  He never hesitated to stop and talk- he honestly cared about people - whether it was another attorney, the parking attendant, the elevator operator, a cab driver - it didn't matter to Lew.  He loved people and wanted to know their story.  He was an excellent attorney, mentor and all around amazing human.     He was friends with everyone and had a smile and a story to tell.   He will forever remain in my broken heart.     My condolences to all who loved him and they are legion.
