I miss Marlene's warmth and enthusiasm. She always welcomed the Massachusetts Herzigs to her home with that big smile and outstretched arms! She is a vivid presence in my mind and heart.

When I think about Marlene, I can only smile. We were so much alike, in so many ways. We even more similar clothes! Our hearts go out to Billy and the rest of the family, the loss of Marlene Is huge. Sending you our love, Amy and Chuck

One of the places that Marlene loved was Longboat Key. A few of us gathered there on the shoreline at sunset Sunday. We offered some words of love for our friend,  some memories of time together, some flowers, and we watched them ride away on the waves.

Dear Marlene,

Thank you for being such a caring and loving friend.  We will miss you terribly but we are fortunate to have all the wonderful memories of good times we shared.

Marlene Herzig wanted others to be happy.  Not for herself, but because she was happy, knew how good that felt, and wanted others to share in it.  That’s special.

People all too often say they don’t feel appreciated.  My mother went far out of her way to make people feel exactly that, appreciated.  And in doing so, they returned that appreciated and often passed it along in a virtuous circle. Special

Even at 50+, I can still remember the disappointment I felt when I had to start kindergarten and not spend all day at home with my mother and father who worked nearby.  We were close and her world view certainly shaped mine – the importance of family, consideration of others and a positive / can do attitude with a lot of energy, especially in the morning fueled with caffeine.

She was a fantastic mother for Liz and me, a great companion for my father, active grandmother to our kids and a natural role model for finding happiness in life and bringing out the best in everyone.  Jodi and I loved her and learned from her throughout the years.  

I love you Mom and I wish you a safe journey and of course, pleasant dreams.

Marlene was a very special person. Besides being sweet and honest,she also had great leadership quality and always tried to do the right thing. We will miss her very much. Love - Robin and mevo

I was about 14 when my brother Bill started dating Marlene. She was always such delightful company that I hoped she would become part of our small family. When in college, I would come home to visit my parents and we would go out to dinner. If I was lucky, Billy would join us with Marlene. Our quiet little family would come alive with her presence and an ordinary evening would turn into a fun filled event.

In my 20’s in Boston,, I visited Billy and Marlene often. It was not uncommon for us to have conversations late into the night about my then difficult relationship with my parents and some tough choices I was making about my future.  Billy would  go to bed and Marlene would stay up talking to me, all ears, focused on my concerns. A live wire personality who really listened when others spoke---it was a rare combination. I felt known and close to her.

In 1968 when my Grandmother Blanche died, a pregnant Marlene told me at the funeral she heard the heart beat of her first born on the same day my Grandmother died. 

Before Blanche died, we would drive into NYC for a Thanksgiving dinner with Grandma Blanche at a fancy restaurant. The following years, it was time for my Mom to become the Thanksgiving hostess. Mom however, was not much of a cook. So she ordered out and we brought in plates of Turkey dinners and ate them at home. Marlene I think found that experience to be a bit sterile because then she decided to host a Thanksgiving dinner with food fresh out of the oven from a her kitchen filled with mouth watering smells. Yum. And so it was for about the next 40 years. Marlene always said Thanksgiving was her favorite holiday and why not; after all gratitude was her way of life.

I’m told that 400 people attended today’s live stream funeral. Marlene touched hundreds of people. She made the lives of everyone she met a little bit better. Her warmth and vivaciousness were unforgettable. I will miss forever her laughter, her sweetness, her exuberance and her love.


Thanksgiving was Marlene's holiday. She beamed with delight as the Massachusetts Herzigs filed in. She smiled that big, expressive smile then the arms went up, ready for the hugs, like the wings of a bird ready for flight. After we sat down at the huge table, we thanked her for all the cooking she did and she immediately named each person who helped and what they did to help, sharing the credit for the feast. As I think about her passing, I think about those arms like birds' wings and I hope that, if there is a journey to be taken after death, her soul is soaring gracefully with wind under her wings.

Dear Bill,
As you well know, Marlene was an unusual gal. She truly elicited smiles when she entered a room. She was ever the cheerleader and an all around terrific woman. Lucky you to have had 60 years together.

I have so many memories of Marlene, its difficult to recount them all. She was one of my first friends at Seawane. We played golf weekly, and in every tournament, social and charitable. We went to the theater, often. We were in an investment group together, We played bridge together. Although I have not spent time with her for many months, she was constantly in my thoughts. I will miss that beautiful smile, the love she gave to everyone. May she be at peace.

I remember walking to the dining room from our rooms in New Zealand and Marlene would touch every flower bush along the way and tell me about each species. She loved nature and was like a beautiful flower herself. 

It was an honor to know Marlene since we were teenagers. She had such warmth and happiness with her beautiful smile. She will be missed by so many. 

Marlene was a ray of sunshine to everyone she met and everything she did. She will live on in our hearts and our memories.

Marlene was the best book club hostess and member.   She always made  a beautiful delicious brunch and had decorations That related directly to the book we read. She took wonderful detailed notes, was animated about each contribution and was an absolute delight .  Many books, many memories, many delightful years of sharing.    Book club will never be the same .  I treasure the times we shared.

My deepest condolences to all the family.  Marlene was so friendly and warm to both me and my daughter,.  I remember driving together to art lessons in Roslyn with Jodi and Liz when they were in elementary school.  Also getting lost finding her  beautiful home in Hewlett Harbor. Next time she met me on the main road so I could follow her.  She was such a happy soul. RIP.

The last time that I saw Marlene, she gave me the warmest hug.  It had been years since I had seen her previously but she made me feel like no time had passed.  Her energy and fun loving personality was contagious.  I wish that I had been physically closer to her over the years and could have spent more time with her.  My love to the family.

I first set eyes on Marlene at a library book club. There was this adorable, smiling girl with endless sticky notes  marking notable quotes, and contributing intelligent  thoughts to the discussion. I felt here is a keeper. 
And through the years as we became part of a friends’ book club she never disappointed. . Marlene was always cheerful, insightful, prepared and hospitable. 
In addition, we shared a birthday.  I know I will especially  feel her presence every year on that day.

Words cannot express the sadness in our hearts. Marlene was a very special person and a very special friend. We had so many wonderful times together. 19 years ago we went on the  first of many trips together to golf at Pinehurst. From then on we were Buddies. I remember the first time  we went to Washington D.C. to lobby for AIPAC.  Our plan was to stay over night to see The Holocaust Museum.  We got to the hotel and Marlene said "You know, this is the first time I've been away without Billy". She seemed a little nervous  and I said we could share a room but she said no, she'd be  fine.
The next morning I'm waiting in the lobby for her and she comes in with her big smile .  She told me she had such a good night.  She turned the TV  on and off when she wanted , she turned the lights on and off when she wanted  and also could go for a walk in the morning when she wanted.
We laughed about her night and her new found freedom

I am so saddened by Marlene's leaving, she was the rock to lean on
when in need, even when talking on the phone you could see and feel her smile and cheerfulness. She will be truly remembered for the kind cheerful person she was and the light in the darkest hours.

We will always remember Marlene, as an upbeat lifelong neighbor and friend for many decades. Growing up I would watch her from across the street where I lived in Lawrence leave her house in her cheerleading outfit ..I was in awe of her , and could not wait til I’d be able to cheerlead . She continued to be active through the years in community and charities. Ironically when  we became neighbors again in Hewlett Harbor., she and Billy were then very active running events for HFRC. 
Without a fence separating our properties , our backyards allowed our children access to play with one another freely. We could see a Michael playing basketball and Marlene planting in her garden . .My son remembers  Marlene’s  delicious chocolate brownie cookies ; he and Elizabeth would play and hang in their kitchen waiting beside her baking. Whenever I do bake, I  am reminded of Marlene and envision  her beautiful smile. That smile is the image that will always remain forever with us.
 Married 56 years, Billy and Marlene were  beautiful together since high school . .They were both so  humble and would never brag or boost about their deeds or themselves. .We are among  many friends that had the good fortune to share so many special occasions . We appreciated their friendship  , loyalty and generous nature. Marlene will be remembered in our hearts for her kindness and sincerity .. Our deepest  condolences and love always to Billy, Michael and Elizabeth and their beautiful families. .

I met Marlene through her daughter Liz who married my son Kevin. I always marveled at Marlene in the years I knew her for  her exuberance, her positive energy, and willingness to help with everything. She was a bright light to me whenever we were together. 
I will always be grateful to Marlene for being the force behind Kevin and Liz buying a coffee pot and coffee for her visits. I was a direct beneficiary of her insistence. Go in Peace Marlene, you made me a better person for having known you.

I didn’t get canasta!  Not one bit... however, the first time I was actually playing in a game, after lessons, which didn’t help, Marlene was in my game.  She walked me through every step with patience and love and I GOT IT!    From that point on, we played together constantly.. at seawane, in Boca and had laughs beyond laughs.  I remember so vividly her love for 3pm chocolate pretzels at polo... I would watch her eat them and chocolate chip cookies in awe.  She loved her sweets! 

Marlene ... her contagious constant smile was like no other.   A great lady and a class act.  



To me,Marlene was a very special person.  We shared a love of books and traded authors over the years. I’d say for me, she was one of the nicest, kindest people I’ve met in my life and I will miss her.  My condolences to all of her family and her many dear friends

I didn't know Marlene, though I have heard her praises enthusiastically sung over many years.  She loved many of the same people I love and, the way I hear it, even fed them many sumptuous and entertaining dinners..by my measure, the best way to celebrate life together!  So she is a dear friend.  I am sorry for the loss of such a cherished soul...and the loss of such a welcoming smile.  Thank you for the very moving tribute.  By these pictures, even a distant friend can see she was a very happy and joyful presence to all around her.

I met Marlene at Lawrence High School.  We were sort of the long and short of the class as I stood at 5"11" in those years and Marlene had to look up to me.  In reality, I looked up to her for so many reasons. Our class of 1960 chose wisely when they voted her "Most Popular".  She was everyone's friend and embraced each of us with her welcoming smile. What made her even more special was that she neither coveted that title nor actually thought of herself as most popular.  She was just being Marlene Moelis.

Marlene was the initiator of our many class reunions.  She wanted everyone to attend and worked diligently to find anyone who was missing. She hosted our planning sessions in her family room and graciously included anyone who wanted to participate. 

Through the years my husband, Robert,  and I would meet Marlene and Bill(y) for dinner.  Each time we did so our relationship with the Herzigs became stronger to the point that the Herzigs became treasured friends for both of us.  We had  only one year together in Florida which laid the foundation for future quality time as couples as well as for Marlene and me as cherished friends.

God had other plans.

The news of Marlene's diagnosis was devastating to Robert and me.    We both loved Marlene. Marlene was always up.  She had a joie de vivre unlike anyone else I know.  She was warm, loving, caring and her smile lit up the room.  She was interested and interesting always having so much to talk about.  She embraced her friends with her nurturing ways always thinking of others' feelings.

Bill and Marlene were a perfect couple and they both chose well in deciding who to marry.  Bill was devoted and protective of Marlene throughout her ordeal.  

Marlene was unique- one of a kind-a a very special person. I was lucky to have had her in my life all these years.  I will always miss her.

I will remember Marlene as a kind giving person. When she would ask you how you are she would actually listen to what you would say.  She cared about others.  She contributed to this world.  She was not a taker.  

I am a friend of Liz’s from Naperville. I had the pleasure of speaking to Marlene on several occasions during her visits to see her daughter and daughter’s family. Through our conversations, she made it very apparent how much she loved spending time with them. I know that she will be truly missed.

There are so many memories. Our 11:30 AM lunches,  the AHRC meetings and bazaars, the Women’s Pro Choice March in Washington, WINPAC events in Washington, the trip to DC with Elizabeth and David, golf, bridge, talking and talking on the phone and everywhere , book club and our stock club meetings are just a few. My greatest memory will be Marlene’s wisdom and her beautiful smile. She  will be so missed.
