I was fascinated by her. Simply and totally. Used to follow her at the LA flea market and one day actually summoned the courage to speak with her. She was lovely - this was right before she moved to Florida and I remember suggesting she
consider wearing something in ecru rather than her customary black. I doubt she ever took me up on my suggestion. Suzan was simply iconic. I will always remember her - her gait, style, home and hair piled high on her head. She was beautiful.  I have often thought of her in Florida and wondered if the people there were ready for her. 
I missed sightings of her when she moved and will miss her more deeply knowing that she has taken her leave of earth. 
Rest in Peace, Suzan. You were quite something. Mysterious and inspiring.

As a resident of Wellington, FL,  I spoke with the lovely Ray Suzan Strauss only once and she was so gracious and soft spoken. Many times, I would see her walking in our lovely village. She had such style, elegance and grace and truly seemed fascinating. I will miss seeing this elegant lady of mystery, dressed always in stylish black, in our beautiful village.

I truly miss seeing this unique spirit and lovely lady walking around Wellington. I spoke with her once and knew she had a kind and wise soul.

Suzan was a beautiful and gentle woman. I was only 21 when I first met her in Los Angeles. Back then I started the Melrose Flea Market and would see her every week. Always soft spoken and she was always a pleasure to see at my market. I often wondered what can of her as over time geography happens. I feel lucky to have known her and she will be missed. A true LA Icon in her own right.

I always will remember seeing you walking around Los Angeles. You added that magic of eccentric touch that made LA a special place.

I would love to pay the fee to keep this book open if my husband Jonathan and I,including  our boys Shawn, Nicholas & Michael to take a amazing journey into her home and garden. Even many years later, everyone who saw her, remembers her. She left an impression. She was recognized in her unique style and yet an intriguing mystery: one respected that she was in her own world. Was she shy, introverted, or lonely? I never dared to speak to her but saw her frequently walking in the streets of Los Angeles and at the thrift stores in the Fairfax District. She was a ray of light in a world of conventionailism, mediocracy, complacency, and shallow sensationalism.

The first time I saw Ms. Strauss I was fascinated by her appearance.  I hoped to have the opportunity to talk to her and one day I met her at the Old Wellington Mall.  I asked if I may talk to her and take a photo...she declined and I respected her response.  She struck me as kind and living in her world as she wanted.  I enjoy reading about how many people respected her, from California to Wellington.  It shows that a person's actions speak louder than words...RIP Ms. Strauss

I lived in Wellington in middle school and the mysterious lady in black was a sort of hero to me, I was different and off beat and this woman was to, she made an outcast like me see that I could have a place in the world, I shed a few tears today when I learned she passed away, I wish I could have spoken to her just once to tell her how much I admired her.

I lived in her neighborhood for a few years in the mid-90's and I loved seeing her gracefully gliding down the street, always adorned in her signature outfits and hair. I've thought of her from time to time throughout the years and wondered where she was. I was sad to hear of her passing, but thankful that our lives skirted one another's for a time. The world has too few people who are truly unique and she was one of them. Godspeed Suzan. <3

I was her  mailman in Wellington...a quite woman who walked everywhere.Although her home was large,she expanded it.I asked her Why?..as she lived alone...I like space,,she told me..I admired her,she lived to the beat of a different drum,,and was a peaceful soul..God Bless!

I moved from Minnesota and moved to an apartment off of fountain and Labrea.. used to see her walking.. always said hi to her. She would just always look. One day in front of Ralfs she said Hi back. It felt like I won the lotto.. I always wanted to know more about her, I wanted just to sit down and listen to her story.

Lots of us rememer her from Hollywood. She walked on famed Melrose Ave, height of 70s fashion. She always had fabulous hand made paintsuits.  She was called the Lava Lady because of her black house.

A wonderful Lady who was known throughout Wellington.  I met her while working at Elegant Estates and would drive her home at the end of the day (we were always her last stop). She finally allowed me into her home (she was very afraid of robbers and bad people). She wanted me to see her collections and boy she so great mid century stuff! There are people who have written whole screenplays with her in mind. Whenever I was lucky enough to see her walking on La Brea Ave. in one of her incredible outfits, it was the highlight of my week!

I knew Ray because she lived across the street from my best friends Marion and Barbara Hambrick. I used to see her a lot in the Goodwill store off Belvedere Road and spoke to her often .
