Algue Louis Summar Sr.

Gary, Indiana Age 85 of Gary, IN, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2010. He was born September 9, 1925. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bessie; daughter, Betty A. Ford of Hobart, IN; sons, Algue (Roberta) Summar, Jr. of Gary, IN, Michael Summar of Columbia, TN, Terry (Wanda) Summar of LaPorte, IN, Donald (Lola)Summar of Crown Point, IN, Van Summar and Danny Summar of Gary, IN; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clyde Summar, Jr.; and one sister, Ruby Summar both of Ripley, TN; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Glenora Summar; 3 sisters, Florence Wandler, Evelyn Rose, Maggie Burks; and 3 brothers, James, Dan and Howard Summar. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2010, 1:30 PM at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Rd. (two blocks south of Ridge Rd.), Highland, IN. Rev. Robert Parnell officiating. Burial Chapel Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In 1956, Mr. Summar moved his young family from the home he loved in Tennessee to work at Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. He retired in 1986 and enjoyed the rest of his years with his family and spending time in his garden. In 2009 Mr. Summar was honored for his distinguished service to our country during World War II, receiving several medals including a Bronze Star for bravery. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and fought in three major battles, Ardennes, (Battle of the Bulge Campaign), Rhineland and Central Europe from December 1944 to May 1945.
