Joan was born in Chicago, IL on October 31, 1944, to Henry and Bessie (nee Ebbens) Reus and attended Blue Island High School. She retired from the EJ&E Railway with over 30 years of accounting experience. She enjoyed riding horses at Woodland Ranch in Wisconsin, relaxing on her patio swing, spending time with her two cats, and playing bingo at St. Elijah’s in Merrillville and slots at the casino.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anthony Umek; beloved sister, Patricia Fries; and brother-in-law, Norman Byttow. She is survived by her children, Janet (Edward) Enzenbacher, and James (Kimberly) Baker; sister, Betty Jean Byttow; grandchildren, Conor, Brandon, and Charlie; loving nieces and nephews; and her many friends.
Joan was a fun-loving and energetic woman, brightening up any room with her wit and humor. Retirement never slowed her down; she remained a hard worker and was always willing to help her family and friends.
Per her request, her life will be celebrated on a later date, with a luncheon in lieu of a wake or funeral service.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ChapelLawnFunerals.com for the Umek family.
