

Maria (Mary) Josephine (Josie) Medrano Hawkins was born to Timoteo Medrano, Sr and Frances “Pancha” Saldana Medrano in Pearsall Texas on May 28, 1955. She peacefully passed away on January 31, 2021.
Josie was preceded in death by her parents Timoteo and Francis and her husband John Richard “Rick” Hawkins and her most favorite TV host, Alex Trebek. She leaves behind four children Jason (Angela), Matthew (Hillary Macy), Melinda (her favorite daughter) and Martin (her forever little buddy). She was the best Grandmom to four grandchildren, Tony (Krystal), John “Papa”, Alyson “Mamas” and Jonah. She was also great-grandmother to Kay’lee and Giovani.
Josie was the oldest of 6 children; Susan Alcazar (Arturo Banda), Irma Keller (John), Emelda Medrano (Jose Luis Bustos), Timoteo Jr. (Timmy), and Christy Medrano (Andy). She leaves behind nieces and nephews; Adriana, Grant, Tatiana, Isabella, Coco, Gordon and one sister-in-law, Nancy Tanner (Jeff). She is also survived by her BFF, Nadine Luchene.
Josie was loved by all who knew her and was known for her love and compassion for taking care of the elderly as a caregiver. She took pride in helping whenever she was needed and her doors were always open to anyone needing a place to lay their head. She was an avid reader who enjoyed escaping into a good book. 70’s music was her favorite to dance to and she loved watching her favorite TV shows like Jeopardy, Gilmore Girls, Dancing with the Stars, Leave it to Beaver, and anything on the Hallmark Channel! Going to the movies was one of her most favorite activities and she couldn’t wait to see movies as soon as they premiered! She loved playing Bunco with her bunco club and referred to them as her “Bunco Sisters”. Josie cherished her relationships with her children, grandchildren, her sister Susan and her best friend Nadine.
Josie was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hammond, Indiana for the last 40 years where she was a Sunday School teacher, Trendsetter and Learning League Director. She loved singing along with the music of the choir and attending service every Sunday. Josie walked in her faith daily and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior.
She was a blessing to all who knew her and will be deeply missed by her friends, siblings, nieces and nephews but especially her children and grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 8, 2021 at 11:30 AM at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland IN 46322. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, February 7, 2021 from 12 noon to 5:00 pm at Kuiper Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
