One of my favorite things about Josie was how much she loved her family. On Facebook, she always had a post for every family member that told the birthday person's birthday story.  It was such fun to read them and see the day through her eyes. She will be greatly missed by everyone. 

Josie will always be there in my memories of our church family at Hammond First UMC.  Some of my first memories are of her and Rick as a young family with Jason and Matt and then Melinda and Marty. I remember as the kids were toddlers she made sure they sat with her because they needed to learn to be in church.  If she wasn’t in church the question was asked if something was wrong! As she struggled with health and work and family issues I never saw that her faith did waiver. She knew that God would take care of her. 

Josie was a wonderful lady with a beautiful spirit.   We remember her as a mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly.   She worked hard, gave freely, and had a beautiful faith.  We always appreciated how she welcomed Matt into her home when we lived in Munster.  

Some memories that brought me a smile...
Sitting in room c at the church with Josie finding appropriate books, lessons and coloring /activity sheets for the toddlers and pre school kids. Josie was a very firm believer in starting young children on the right path.  We had a great time sharing ideas and finding hidden treasures.
I roomed with Josie at a Trendsetter retreat and watched in awe as she made a blanket, sewing by hand!
I looked forward to reading Josie’s Facebook posts., especially when she quoted her grandchildren.
Josie’s strength, positivity, and faith are an example for all of us.
I will miss her.


I remember going to your house and we would be playing music and singing and laughing and your mom would come out with drinks snacks and tell  us how great we sounded. Just loving and supporting all of us. ❤️

Secretly telling Josie slang so when she would pick up cute boys (she was always willing to drive Melinda and her friends to the movies and elsewhere) let everyone know she was a cool mom not a regular mom.

Josie came highly recommended to care for our mother, Shirley. 
She was not only a talented caregiver but also managed all of mom’s needs. One of her last gifts to us was teaching her sister to be the wonderful caregiver she is.
Someone so special can never be forgotten.

I didn't know her too good but she was the Mother of two of my friends and we were neighbors on Carroll street I know how hard it is to lose a parent and I want to give my condolences to the family .God bless your family.

I was very blessed and fortunate to know Josie.  I had many wonderful conversations with her over the years mostly about the Learning League.   She definitely ran her race well and was definitely a beacon of light.   It was such a blessing to know her.  She encouraged me to be a better person in my walk with God.  

Our family so loved and appreciated Josie who was our Mom’s main Caregiver for a number of years. Josie was always so caring and knew exactly what to do.  As our Mom needed more care after hospital and rehab stays, Josie brought in Susan to help and eventually take over managing our Mom’s care.  Our love and sincerest condolences go out to Susan and all of Josie’s family and friends.

Josie was loved by Nadine’s Kentucky family. When Nadine came to Kentucky you expected to see Josie. Fly high my friend...your Kentucky family will always love you! See you on the other side!

I have many memories since Josie was and will always be my sister-in-law. The best one was when I was in elementary school and I would stay with her and Rick because my mom was ill. It was around Christmas it was just her and I and she would drive around the ritzy neighborhoods and we would look at all the lights. Christmas is my favorite time of year and that’s because Josie made it that way for me.  Hang a star on the tree for me. I will miss you. Love you❤️

Always a pleasure to work with Josie at the Learning League. She was always pleasant and accommodating. A real blessing to me and many others.

Josie was part of the Durbin family when Nadine would visit us Josie was usually with her, which we loved having her. One of my favorite memories was when Josie laid on my chase lounge for the first time she told Nadine this is where I’m sleeping and you can’t have it. I don’t think she left that spot for hours afraid someone would claim her seat. 
She was so kind and generous, when my husband Ken was diagnoses with terminal cancer Josie right away made him a prayer blanket, which he used every day until his death. 
You don’t have to be blood family to be family and Josie lived as everyone was family. All her new her are going to miss her! Rest In Peace Josie!

I met Josie many years ago when Nadine brought her to Kentucky. She became an extension of the family.  Will miss her. 

Josie was a beacon of light. Jules always tells the story how your mom made me a cheese cake Everyday til I had her. Because she believed that's what makes little girls.  And it worked. Lol. And nothing was better than listening to you boys singing Boys to Men. The love we shared will always be in our hearts. 

I don’t even know where to begin. I first met Josie when my father was the janitor at First United Methodist Church in Hammond, IN. Afterwards, she came and worked in the Medical Records room with me at Family Wellness Center. She would bring in a little Walkman with a speaker and would play music in the back room and we bonded over REO Speedwagon’s “Take it on the Run.” (If you were wondering, that was the song playing on my speakers during her birthday parade last year.) During the last part of 2008 and beginning of 2009, I had some pretty rough times at my house and she opened up her home to me. She let sleep on her couch, share a Pepsi (so long as I replaced it) and made the most delicious food. I remember watching Mamma Mia with her and singing along to all of ABBA’s greatest hits. She was like a second mother to me; her family an extension of my own and though my time staying with her was short, I cannot put into words the amount of love and gratitude I have for her, always. She was a light to anyone who knew her, smart as a whip, with a fiery personality that took no crap and was fiercely protective of all in her life. Like her year round Christmas tree, which she loved, she lit up a room. I’m honored to have had her in my life. She will be greatly missed by myself and all who knew her. My deepest condolences to her family during this time of great loss. Love you Mama.
