Lois was born on February 11, 1932 to John and Ada (Moore) Stahlhut in Hammond, IN. She graduated from Hammond High School in the class of 1950, and had lifelong friends from her school days. Lois lived at home as an only child as she worked at various jobs, including Fifields, Purdue University Calumet, and Carson Pirie Scott and Company at the Woodmar Shopping Mall. Lois met her husband, James Joseph Skufakiss, in 1961 on a blind date, and married James later that year on September 9, 1961. They stayed married for life until James passed away on her birthday in 2008. Lois gave up her ideas of a career and preferred to raise her two children as a stay at home mother.
She was a dedicated mother to Jeffrey James Skufakiss (Denea) of Schererville, IN and Jill Ellen Uchiyama (Skufakiss) of Manchester, NH, as well as a loving grandmother to Olivia Skufakiss (d. 2005) and twins Evan and Elise Skufakiss (b. 2007).
Lois was truly the interior designer of her own home and loved creating a warm and festive environment as she put together beautiful holidays filled with decorations, cards and gifts. Her great thoughtfulness toward others’ birthdays and her perennial Christmas spirit was undeniable. Lois loved to bake cookies, garden, and decorated her home with beauty, love, and care. She also stood for animal protection and cherished the pets in her life, which included ponies, dogs and cats, and was a regular contributor to the Humane Society. For many years, Lois belonged to the Hessville Women’s Club and was a lifelong member of the Woodmar Methodist Church, often volunteering to help with funerals, rummage sales, and other events. In addition, she volunteered with the Mayflower Home, offering support to girls.
There will be a private burial and she will be laid to rest at Chapel Lawn Cemetery.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.KuiperFH.com for the Skufakiss family.
