Mary (Betty) Scott, nee Williams, age 89, of Hammond, Indiana passed away August 27, 2015. Mary is survived by her children: Paul Scott, Pam (David) Locker, Patty (Joseph) Cooke, Penny Scott, Pat (Kelly) Scott, Polly (Tim) Stephen, and Peggy (Don) Haynes along with fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Scott, her youngest daughter Paula Scott Waldron who was her “baby” and best friend, her infant daughter, Rebecca, her son-in-law Joseph Cooke, her three brothers: John, Dale and Bernard (Vance) and her parents Charlotte and George Williams.
Mary grew up in Wheatfield, Indiana where she was a cheerleader and went to high school with her future husband. She attended Indiana University for one semester then moved to South Bend to work (sorting scrap metal) during the war years. Mary enjoyed reading, movies, and all genres of music and had a great sense of humor. She was a lifelong recycler, well ahead of the times. She was an avid Chicago sports fan. Mary worked at Amvets for many years and officially retired at the age of eighty. She was a lifelong member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Hessville. Most of all, Mary will be remembered as a strong and fiercely independent woman who was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother.
Mary will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Dementia robbed her mind and body of all she loved as time passed, however, the years of dementia allowed Mary and her family an opportunity to grow and learn from each other. The mind and all its wonders can make a small house seem big, can produce a doorway to Jupiter, can make one believe in the powers of Sock Girl, can secretly deliver lifesaving midnight muffins, and can help develop relationships with TV and movie characters (thanks Monk, Beaver, Opie, Matilda, etc.).
To honor her memory - Enjoy something each day, make life sweeter for those around you and share your love and energy with others. In short, make the most of every second, moment, day…it all adds up to a wonderful life.
Private Family Visitation: On Monday, August 31st from 9:00-10:30am at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Rd, Highland, IN followed by a Funeral Service in the same location at 10:30am.
