Burl Franklin Kanipes, 89, of Chattanooga passed away peacefully on July 30, 2024 at the Hospice of Chattanooga Care Center. He was born September 28, 1934 to the late Fred and Bernice Kanipes in Anderson Co. TN.
Burl graduated from Clinton High School in 1952. In 1958 he moved to Chattanooga and began a career with Hamilton County Department of Education in the maintenance department that spanned 35 years and upon retirement in 1993 he was the Supervisor of Maintenance for the school system. Burl was a member of IBEW Local 175. He and his wife, Etta are members of Redemption Point Church.
Some of Burl’s favorite pastimes and hobbies were hunting, camping and traveling. He loved visiting the National Parks and pulling his camper. He actually traveled all the way to Alaska in what was his “bucket list” trip. He visited all the contiguous states and National Parks. Burl was an avid Tennessee Volunteer Fan, and enjoyed watching all the teams play.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Heddie Kanipes and Walker and Molly Long, sons; Lloyd and Michael Kanipes, sisters; Eloise Kanipes, Juanita Pugh, Katheline Smith and Martha Turnbill, brother; Kenneth Kanipes and a great-grandson, Jacob Duncan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Etta Jane Green Kanipes, daughters; Diann (Butch) Mullins of Ringgold, GA., and Valerie (Tim) Duncan of Clinton, TN., son; Bart Eaton of Chattanooga, grandchildren; Justin and Christopher Mullins, Jason, William and Ashley Duncan, Laura Ramasamy, Jeremy Kanipes, Mary Koons, and Braden Kanipes, great-grandchildren; Grace, Elias, Josiah, Ella, Cade, Zoe, Logan, Ethan, Cole, Sophia, and Meredith.
A Celebration of Burl’s Life will be held at the North chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Friday August 2, 2024, at 6:00 pm with Rev. Travis Ballinger officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service starting at 3:00 pm. He will be laid to rest in his hometown of Clinton, Tennessee in the R.W. Long Cemetery on Saturday at 1:00 pm where a graveside service for friends and family will be held.
