Evan Calhoun Powell Jr., 91, of Lookout Mountain Georgia passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, surrounded by his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and community involvement that touched countless lives.
Born on March 6, 1934, in Lyerly, Georgia, he was the son of EC and Helen (Jones) Powell. He grew up with strong family values and a deep sense of duty that would guide him throughout his life. After moving to Tennessee, he graduated as Senior Class President from Hixson High School in 1953. He proudly served in the United States Navy.
Following his military service, Evan began a long and respected career as a steamfitter/pipefitter. In 1960, he became an active member of UA Local 43 Plumbers and Steamfitters-a commitment that spanned more than six decades. His work ethic and professionalism earned him the respect of colleagues across the region.
Evan's dedication extended far beyond his profession. He was deeply involved in numerous fraternal organizations for most of his life. Evan was a Mason for 70 years and was a 33rd degree Mason. He was a member of the Scottish Rite for 47 years. He also belonged to The Alhambra Shrine, the Royal Order of Jesters, and the Order of Quetzalcoatl Monte Vista 66. Among his most meaningful contributions was his work with The Road Runners-a group dedicated to transporting children to Shriners Hospitals for medical care at no cost to their families. Evan personally logged over 100 trips and traveled more than 200,000 miles in this mission of compassion.
Family was at the heart of Evan's life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Betty; daughter Angie (Marlyne), their sons Skip (Dorothy) and Steve (Tammie); six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren and his beloved dogs Raven and Remy. His love for his family
was unwavering and evident in every aspect of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Jack Powell; and sister Kaye Helms.
Evan Calhoun Powell, Jr.'s life was one marked by service-to his country, his trade, his community, and most importantly to those he loved. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 8th from 2:00 pm-6:00 pm and from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on Monday February 9th at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, Hixson. The funeral service will be in the funeral home chapel Monday at 1:00 pm with pastor Tom Tucker officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Masonic Honors.
