I was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 17, 1923, to the late Charles and Betty Miller. I grew up in Red Bank and attended White Oak Elementary, Northside Jr. High, Red Bank High School (1st graduating class 1941), and the Wiley School of Business. I received my BS from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC).
I married Charles Wolff in 1945 after he returned from the South Pacific, where he served with the Marines in WWII. His dad gave us a plot of land on Old Pineville Rd, which was a cow pasture at the time. It was there that we began to build a home that would see us raise 4 children (3 daughters and a son). We built our home with a hand operated cement mixer and moved stuff with a jeep that Charles brought home from the war. After Charles’ father Alex passed away, the rest of the property was given to us by his siblings.
Charles went on to teach shop at Red Bank High School for many years and I stayed home to raise the kids (all along I was working on my degree). After I completed my BS and the kids were all grown, I went to work with the Hamilton County School System in the Head Start Program and spent many years teaching there. After Charles passed away in 2001, I became the proud owner of not 1, but 2 pieces of property.
I have never lived anywhere else and quite frankly wouldn’t choose too. If all of this seems confusing, please consider that I am writing this when I was 100 years old (just in case you have questions).
Evelyn Wolff was a member of White Oak United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband Charles, and daughter, Charlyne Bodkin. Evelyn is survived by daughters Phyllis Adgent and Teresa Sheridan, son Charles (Terry) Wolff II, granddaughter Raina (Patrick) Singleton, and great grandchildren Hartley and Gia.
A graveside service to honor Evelyn’s 102 years of life will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband, Charles.
In lieu of flowers and in Evelyn’s memory just pay it forward.
