Jewell was born and raised in DeKalb County, Alabama and has been a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area. She retired from Dixie Yarns with 50 years of service. Jewell has been a member of Lupton Drive Baptist Church for 68 years where she was active in the church seniors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lewis Carter; her parents, John and Willie Mae O’Shields; siblings, Curtis, Novel and Gerthel O’Shields.
Jewell is survived by her daughter Shelba Jolley; grandson, Dr. Jay Jolley; several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers Glenda Clayton and Jo Ann Martin and the staff at Soddy Daisy Health Care Center, who loved and became her extended family.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm on Monday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
Graveside services for Jewell will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Reverend Randy Bell and Reverend Roger DeHart officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jewell’s name to Lupton Drive Baptist Church, 859 Lupton Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37415.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
