James A. Coulter, age 97 of Hixson, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 5, 2025. Shortly after arriving in Glory, Jimmy no doubt asked to see his beloved wife of 71 years, Lucy, who predeceased him.
Jimmy was born in the family home in Lupton City, Tennessee to the late James Bruce and Maggie Brewer Coulter on August 20, 1927. He attended grammar school in Lupton City and junior high at Hixson, where he was crowned May Day King in the eighth grade. His family moved to a farm in Graysville, Tennessee in 1942 and he spoke fondly of his days as a country boy. Jimmy graduated Rhea Central High School in 1946 and promptly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
In 1947 Jimmy saw Lucille for the first time, wearing a yellow sweater, while sitting on a wall in Lupton City. It was love at first sight, at least on his part, as he told his buddy "She's mine." They married in June 1949 and were inseparable until Lucy's death.
Jimmy had a long career with Olin, later Alcan, and also worked with his daughter Melinda in her retail store. He retired for the first time shortly after his 65th birthday. Having accomplished all the yard projects he could think of, and at the insistence of Lucy, Jimmy took a part-time job at the Hixson Walmart when it opened in October 2001. He enjoyed working in the Tire Center until he retired for the final time in April 2011.
Jimmy was a member of Dallas Bay Church for many years. His deep faith and love of the Lord were evident to all who knew him. Jimmy never met a stranger and greeted everyone with a warm smile and often a joke. He was an avid fan of the UT Vols, and the Atlanta Braves.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ina Lucille Coulter; daughter, Rhonda Jewell; his parents; brothers, Brewer, Johnson, Frank, and Walter; sisters, Katherine Moore and JoAnn Coulter.
Jimmy, affectionately called Pop, is survived by his daughter, Melinda (Fred) Cato; grandchildren, Cherie Jewell (Sean Martin), Jim (Renee) Jewell, Tamara (Dean) Riggleman; great-grandchildren, Dr. Sean (Camellia) Forrest, Wade, Reid, and Caroline Jewell; his great-great grandchild Juniper Forrest; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted from the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Thursday January 9, 2025, with Jim Jewell officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until service time at North Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Samaritan's Purse.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
