She was born August 2, 1930, in Ringgold, Georgia, the daughter of John Lester and Myrtle Childers Sisson. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John M. Sisson Sr (Marian) and brother, Lee; sisters, Thelma Sisson, Annie Mae Powell (Rod), and Helen Thaxton (Bud).
Julia will be missed, but never forgotten by her beloved husband of 68 years, George W. Hammon, Sr.; sons G. William Hammon, Jr. (Cathy), R. Timothy Hammon (Kathleen), Michael S. Hammon (Amy); and favorite daughter, Letha A Hammon (Bland Dickey); grandchildren, G. William Hammon III (Brittany), C. Elizabeth Hammon (Patrick Nichols), Julia C. Hammon, Madeline A. Hammon, Quinn G. Hammon, Bennett M. Hammon; great grandchildren, Bailey J. Hammon, Lillian H. Nichols, G. William Hammon IV and Imogene H. Nichols; nephew John M. Sisson Jr (Judy), many Hammon in-laws, nieces, nephews and Sisson cousins.
Julia will be remembered for her quick wit, loving heart, and passion for Family. Julia graduated from Ringgold High as a star basketball player, and attended The University of Georgia. Julia developed a spirit of adventure that served her throughout her life. She enjoyed US and foreign travel with friends and family. Family vacations are some of the fondest memories we have, along with, of course, her famous cheese straws, pimiento cheese and MaMaw’s Sausage Muffins.
Julia taught at Ringgold Elementary, later working for DuPont in Chattanooga, where she met her husband George. As Julia and George built their family and throughout multiple DuPont transfers with George, Julia focused on family and her Christian faith first. She was known as the “hostess with the mostest,” talented flower designer, and beloved friend to many…not to mention a charter member of the “Poker Club.”
As an empty nester, Julia became a successful professional realtor utilizing her talents to envision and design a space as “what could be” vs. what simply was. Upon both of their retirements, Julia and George moved to Tennessee, enjoying life on the Tennessee River, being with family and longtime friends, making new friends with Supper Club and joining Rivermont Presbyterian Church.
