Larry Clyde Canfield, age 85, went home to his Lord and Saviour on March 27, 2026. Born December 30, 1940, in Bowling Green, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Mary Canfield, and survived by his siblings Pat Koehler, Wayne (Bud) Canfield, and Barbara Pirkey.
Larry met the love of his life, Evelyn, and married in 1964. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He shared 61 years of marriage with Evelyn, a partnership marked by enduring love and faithfulness. Together they raised four sons: Jeffery (Kristi) of Columbus, OH; Keith (Beth) of Columbus, OH; Timothy (Emily) of Chicago, IL; and Craig (Chasity) of Clayton, CA. Larry was a proud grandfather to Kayla, Daniel, Sharah, Jenna, Krista, Isabella, Liliana, Hannah, and Hope. Great grandfather to Kayla's two children: Juniper and Shiloh, and uncle to many nephews and nieces. All of whom brought him great joy.
Larry graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1959. He served in the United States Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation from 1959-1963. He went on to serve his community as a Bowling Green City Police officer for 26 years, retiring from BGPD in 1995. Larry and Evelyn relocated to Hixson, Tennessee in 1996, where he worked for Blood Assurance for 17 years.
A man of deep and abiding Christian faith, Larry was an active, faithful member of Dallas Bay Church in Hixson, Tennessee. He lived out his faith not only in words, but through a life marked by kindness, humility, and love for others. His life reflected the promises he held dear in Scripture, including Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest,” John 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die,” and Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Larry found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments. He was a lifelong New York Yankees fan, loved watching baseball, and spent many years coaching his sons in little league in Bowling Green. He enjoyed working with his hands and took pride in building things—adding a major addition to his house in BG, a garage, cabinets, furniture, and a gazebo. When his boys were young, he welcomed them to watch and learn his skills, patiently giving them small jobs and teaching, by example, creating memories that would endure for generations. In later years, all four of his sons carried on that legacy, becoming men who build and fix things themselves, now involving their own children just as their dad once did.
Larry will be remembered for his integrity, his unwavering love for his family, his steadfast faith, and his signature “big bear hugs” that made those he loved feel safe and cherished. His strong prayers and quiet example of faith will remain a lasting legacy to all who knew him.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm until 2 pm on Thursday, April 2nd at the North Chapel.
A memorial service will follow on Thursday April 2nd at 2pm, at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel in Hixson.
