She was raised on a 200-acre tobacco, cattle and poultry farm boasting over 37,000 chickens. As a child she would often accompany her dad on “work” trips as they delivered eggs to Knoxville restaurants and other East Tennessee establishments.
Mary graduated from Maury High School and she was a Tennessee Tech University alumna where she met her husband, Bobby Carmack.
After college graduation, Mary and Bobby wed and upon receiving his draft notice, Bobby enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1970. As the wife of a military service member, Mary lived in San Antonio, Texas, and Germany. While living overseas, Mary and Bobby enjoyed trips to Switzerland, France, and other European countries. After military service, Mary and Bobby returned to the US and moved to Chattanooga in December of 1974, where she made her home for more than 50 years.
Mary was a longtime member of Hixson United Methodist Church and dedicated many years of her life to working as a preschool teacher, where she touched the lives of countless children and families.
Mary was known for her exceptional baking, especially desserts, and shared those desserts with the community and her family. As a testament to her baking talent, she received constant requests for the specialty desserts one could only find coming from her kitchen. Mary enjoyed sharing her baking talents with her grandchildren too; creating fond memories of days spent baking hundreds of cookies at “Gma’s” house.
Clearly Mary was multi-talented, as she held the title of “green thumb” with a love of gardening, and the beauty she created through her gorgeous flowers and arrangements.
Mary loved holidays, especially Christmas, which became a 2-day Christmas gift opening event for her grandchildren. She enjoyed decorating her home from floor to ceiling with Christmas décor, creating an immersive Christmas museum experience including displaying her large, ever expanding, collection of figurine Santas.
She had a kind and caring heart, always putting others before herself. Above all, she treasured her family, and her greatest joy was the time she spent with her beloved grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bobby Carmack; her daughter, Crystal Scott (Sam); her cherished grandchildren, Kingston, Holland, and Loxley; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
