Michael Wayne Nelms

Born on July 19, 1954 in Chattanooga, TN, he was a graduate of Chattanooga City High and the University of Kentucky.

Mike was Head Golf Professional for 38 years at Creeks Bend Golf Club. He was not only an exceptional professional but a great player. Just a few accomplishments included, second place in the USGA National Junior Championship, High School State Champion, Two State Open Championships, Tennessee State Amateur Champion and Member of the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame.

His greatest impact was on the youth of the game. For decades he shaped the Chattanooga golf community through one-on-one lessons, junior golf clinics, and youth tournaments. The influence Mike had on young golfers on and off the course will continue to live on through the generations he taught, mentored and inspired.

Mike was the son of the late William Nelms, Sr., and Ethel Nelms. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vickie Nelms, the love of his life.

Mike is survived by his brother, William Nelms, Jr. (Jan), his sister, Carol White, sister-in-law, Dee Dee Moore (Joe), nephews, Josh Nelms (Beth), Nicholas White, and Joe Moore (Kate), niece Erin Enloe (Ben), and several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Monday January 19, 2026, at 1:00 PM EST with Minister Patrick Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM until service time.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Tennessee Golf Foundation Youth Golf Scholarships Fund at tngolffoundation.org
