
Napoleon M. “Nap” Smith, age 92, of Chattanooga died Saturday February 12, at his home. He was born October 7, 1918 in DeWitt, AR, the son of the late Lewis and Lottie (Montgomery) Smith. He attended grammar and high school on DeWitt. He then went to Hendrix College in Conway, AR, where he graduated in 1940. While there he met his future wife, Mary Stone of Biscoe, AR.
He is a World War II Navy Veteran having served as a radar officer in Washington, DC and in the Pacific Area. After the war he worked for McKesson and Robbins in San Angelo, TX, St Louis, MO and Chattanooga. In 1962 he founded his own business which grew to include two retail stores, in one of which Mary established a Needlework and Knit Shop. In the late 1970’s they sold the business and moved from the Brainerd area to North Chattanooga.
He and his family were members of Central Presbyterian Church until that property was sold and its remaining members went to Northside Presbyterian Church. Both he and Mary were long time members of the Chattanooga Duplicate club.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years Mary Smith, three children: Virginia Smith of Nashville, Kathryn Hannon of Atlanta and Monty, a professor at UTSI in Tullahoma, TN as well astwo grandchildren James Montgomery Davis-Smith and Alexander Page Davis-Smith of Nasville.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 am at the Northside Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ben Skidmore officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
A private burial will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
