Norman Edward “Eddy” Williams, born October 4, 1956, finally got out of doing chores on September 24, 2025. After 68 years of questionable golf scores, Braves-induced heartbreak, and pretending not to hear his wife’s honey-do list, he wrapped up his final shift on earth surrounded by family and faith. He was greeted in Heaven by his parents, Jeanette & Huck Williams, his grandparents, Mini & John “Pa” Williams and Laura & Byron Singleton, and a few brothers from the fire department; where we’re certain the stories are already being swapped and the coffee pot is never empty.
Eddy proudly served in the Chattanooga Fire Department from March 1983 until his retirement as Captain in March 2011. He led with courage, grit, and the kind of humor that outsiders would have found offensive, but made the toughest days lighter for the guys on Blue Shift.
He graduated from Central High School in 1974 and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves – though, in classic Braves fashion, they didn’t seal the deal. Eddy would spend the rest of his life loving the Braves despite their best attempts at testing his blood pressure every season. He carried that same competitive spirit to the golf course, where he was notorious for never keeping score accurately – but miraculously, always in his favor. He should have been nominated for a Pulitzer in fiction writing.
Eddy was a proud member of Meadowview Baptist Church, where he was best known as Poppa Eddy. There, he gave his whole heart to the youth, showing up with love and humor and mentoring them like they were his own. He was a member of Fidelity #588 Masonic Lodge and a passionate supporter of the Ronald McDonald House.
Eddy is survived by his loving wife, Gale, his children, Kayla Allemore (Reese Allemore), Perry Williams (Jami Williams), grandson Knox (his favorite role of all), his brother, Mark Williams, and sister-in-law, Jutta Escher, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who knew him as the guy you always wanted in your corner.
Please honor Eddy by playing a round of golf (and shave a few strokes off your score), stop leaving runners on base, or just laugh a little louder than usual. That’s how he’d want to be remembered.
The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Eddy’s life at Meadowview Baptist Church on Saturday, October 4th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, Eddy would like you to make a donation to the Ronald McDonald House of Chattanooga,
Visitation will be held at Meadowview Baptist Church on Friday, October 3rd from 4-8pm..
