

Stanley E. Stewart of Hixson passed away on December 14th 2016. He was born in Dekalb County, Alabama on January 8, 1925. He graduated from Dekalb Co. High School in 1943 and then entered the Navy during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1950 he went to work at DuPont. After 35 years at DuPont, he retired and went on to work at Kmart for another 14 years. Stanley was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and a former member of Northside Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of American Legion, Post 159 and the Disabled American Veterans. He served on the Credit Committee and the Board of Directors at DuPont Community Credit Union for 50 years. He was an avid golfer and loved to play baseball. Stanley is preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Ella Stanley Stewart and brother E.G. Stewart. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lera Driskill Stewart, daughters Karla Lola Thomas (Brian) and Jan Carter (Bill), grandchildren Julie Alexander, Emily Mahoney, Racy Mahoney, Carolyn Carter, and Payne Carter, a sister Dorothy Jean Guest, as well as several nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Services will be held at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel on Saturday December 17, 2016 with visitation from 10:00am – 1:00pm and funeral service following at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Avalon Hospice or Red Bank Baptist Church. The family would like to express a special thank you to Elaine Clemens and to Jackie, Paula, and all of the nurses at Avalon Hospice. Pallbearers are longtime friends from DuPont Community Credit Union: Allen Neely, John Langworthy, Stan Hopkins, Bob Flynn, Jimmy Hutton, Bob Mader, Pete Ensign, and Kendall Foster. Honorary Pallbearers are Richard “Catfish” Harris, Joyce West, and Doris Gray.
