Sylvia Jean White, 85, went to be with the Lord on March 26. She attended Burk’s United Methodist Church and church on the lake. She retired from Hamilton County as a school bus driver and also worked at Dupont and Carta.
Sylvia played softball across six decades, beginning at age 10 at Alton Park Community Center. She starred for the Du Pont Nylons for several years then played for Boat Mart. Following a 15-year career with Boat Mart, she managed a team in Gastonia, N.C., that won the state tournament before ending her career by managing Budweiser from 1982-85. As a bowler, she once rolled a 288. She was an all-star wherever she played and was inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame in 2015 for softball. Later in life she played golf with the Brainerd Women’s Golf Association. Her favorite hobby was supporting the TN Lady Vols basketball team.
She was proceeded in death by her parents Robert and Lillie White, brothers Ralph, Randolph, Gordon and Ferdinand and sister Inez Stephenson. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 29, in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home at 12:00 noon followed by the service at 1:00 p.m.
