Walter "Gene" Eugene Dickerson

Born in Memphis, TN, in 1949, Gene moved to Chattanooga where he graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1967. After completing mainframe and other computer training, he earned an A.B. Degree in Business Management from LaSalle University. He worked briefly for the American National Bank before moving to Atlanta where he was employed with Gulf Oil Corporation and later to the San Francisco Bay Area, being employed with the Chevron Companies. Gene’s IT career of 43 years culminated with 14 years with Shaw Industries in Dalton. He loved being able to solve problems during the many changes in this industry.

Gene was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church in his childhood and youth and went on to serve in various capacities in three other United Methodist churches. More recently he was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church (EPC) for 18 years. He was an ordained Deacon in the Presbyterian Church USA. He was an avid sports fan. Other interests included his model trains and researching family heritage and genealogy. His favorite activity was spending time with family, especially his children, grandchildren, and sisters.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Eldridge Dickerson; grandparents, James F. and Annie Hinkle Eldridge; Walter R. and Alma Briggs Dickerson.

Gene is survived by his wife of 43 years, Frances; son, Matt (Carrie) Dickerson of Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Becky (Mikeal) Cox of Signal Mtn.; grandchildren, Abby and Lily Dickerson of Indianapolis, Tucker and Bella Cox and Kyle Boggess of Signal Mtn.; sisters, Gerri (Henry) Wilson and Jane Moye, all of Ft. Oglethorpe, GA. Others include uncles and aunts, Robert (Jeanette) Eldridge of Chattanooga and Don (Karen) Eldridge of Houston, TX; brother-in-law, Morris Welch of Baton Rouge, LA; several cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, May 9, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home and 10 to 11 am on Wednesday, May 10, at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, 612 James Blvd., Signal Mtn., TN 37377.

A service of resurrection will follow at 11am on Wednesday at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private.

The family thanks the men and women of Tennessee Oncology and Hospice Care of Chattanooga for their tireless, skilled, and compassionate care of Gene during his lengthy illness.
