Walter “Mason” Richard, 90, of Hixson, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home on April 5, 2026. Born on February 28, 1936, in Memphis, Tennessee, Mason lived a life defined by dedication, service, and a passion for education.
Mason proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. Following his military service, he returned to Memphis, where he worked full time at Ivers and Pond Piano Company while attending night school. Through determination and perseverance, he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Memphis State University, where he also discovered his lifelong calling for teaching.
Over the course of his career, Mason inspired countless students at Eastern Kentucky University, Southern Illinois University, and the University of Alabama, where he served as a teaching assistant while pursuing his PhD. He later continued his teaching career at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Dalton State College. For decades, he stood before classrooms sharing knowledge, encouraging growth, and fostering curiosity in all who had the privilege of learning from him. He was known for his clarity, patience, and genuine commitment to his students’ success.
In addition to his academic career, Mason was a Certified Public Accountant and built his own practice in Hixson, Tennessee. He served his clients with integrity and care, forming lasting relationships—many of whom became close friends.
Mason is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Matil; his daughters, Michelle (Keith) Holland of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, and Teri (Scott) Lakes of Fishers, Indiana; and his grandsons, Hunter Holland, Cole Holland, Harrison Lakes, and William Lakes.
A private family funeral was held on April 13, 2026, at Chattanooga’s National Cemetery.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, respected educator, and trusted friend. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched through his teaching, his service, and his kindness.
