

Born on February 2, 1931 in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, he was the son of a career Army officer. After his father’s passing in 1939, his family settled in Texas, attending schools in San Antonio, Marfa, and Del Rio. Upon graduating from high school, he enrolled at Texas A&M where he received a BBA. After graduating from A&M in 1952 and receiving a US Army commission, he served in Korea.
Following his military service, he returned to Texas and met his wife, Carol Stepczyk, while attending graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin. After moving to Houston, he formed a CPA firm and later was joined in the practice of public accounting by his son, Gary.
Al was predeceased by his parents, Alonso V. & Mildred J. Thorpe, his brother James Thorpe and his sister Alice Foster. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Carol, and their three children, Anne T. Good (Scott), Gary M. Thorpe (Amy), Jeffrey B. Thorpe and four grandchildren, Randal & Ross McDonald and James & Allison Thorpe.
The family will receive friends and family from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Rd., Houston, Texas 77055. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Waltrip Funeral Directors.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider contributions in honor of Al Thorpe to the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital or the charity of your choice.
