

“One of the Good Ones”
March 16, 1923 – January 20, 2021
On January 20, 2021 Al passed away peacefully and is now at home with Jesus.
Al was born on March 16, 1923 in Kansas City, Mo. to Allie and Esther (Neville) Zumsteg. Al spent his childhood years in Kansas City, Mo. After graduating from De La Salle Academy in 1941 he joined the U.S. Marine Corp, serving in WWII. Just prior to sailing off to Japan he married his sweetheart Marijane Stark in at St. Josephs Cathedral in San Diego, California He returned to Kansas City after the war where he and Marijane started a family and a new career in sales with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad.
In August 1957 Al, Marijane and children, Judy, Mike and Steve moved to Houston, Texas settling into their new home in Spring Branch where their fourth child, Chris was born. In Houston Al was a board member of the Houston Transportation Club where he made many life-long friends.
Al retired from C&NW railroad in 1985 but did not slow down. He spent much of his time helping those who could not do for themselves.
As a founding member of St. Jerome Catholic Church Al was very active as an usher and money counter. He was also a member of The Knights of Columbus Council 4550. He enjoyed bowling and golf but most of all he enjoyed helping others. Family was very important to Al, he especially enjoyed sharing the holidays with his family and often included a friend who would have otherwise been alone.
After the death of his wife Marijane in December 2003, Al met and later married Alice Parrot also a member of St. Jerome Church. Al and Alice were very active in the church, the VFW and the Houston-Spring Branch Lions Club. They enjoyed many years together and enjoyed bowling and traveling. They continued to bowl together into their 80’s.
Al’s friendly handshake and smile were his calling card. He was a man of great integrity and faith in his fellow man. His presence will be missed.
Al is preceded in death by his first wife Marijane, son Christopher and second wife Alice. He is survived by his children Judith Joiner and husband Grady, son Michael and son Steve and wife Phyllis and Grandson Mark Joiner.
The Family wishes to thank the staff and friends at Brookdale Willowbrook Assisted Living/Clare Bridge, Brookdale Hospice and Touching Hearts caregivers for their compassionate care, kindness and friendship.
A visitation was held from 5pm until 7pm on Thursday January 28, 2021 with a Rosary at 6:30pm at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 8825 Kempwood Dr., Houston, Texas. A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00am on Friday, January 29 at the church.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jerome Church Building Fund or a Charity of your choice.
