

The family moved to Houston, where she attended school in the Houston Independent School District and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Later, she attended Manpower Business School and graduated from Texas Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communication. She was baptized at an early age and was a member of North Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of pastor Matthew Davis Sr. Later, she moved her membership to Central Garden Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of pastor Dr. L. D. Gilliam. Lastly, she found her home at Greater Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of pastor Jesse H. Jones.
In 1974, Elaine met and married Jesse Lewis in Houston, Texas. To this union, four children were born: Sherelle, Jesse Jr., Cedric, and Jamaal. Elaine worked in various occupations, including 40 years of service with the Houston Postal Service as a Manager of Computerized Mail Forwarding, Human Resource Specialist Supervisor, and a Postal Service Training Technician. She worked 10 years with the Houston Belt & Terminal Railroad Company as a Key Punch Operator and later became the first black Transportation Supervisor.
Elaine was a caring, loving, and hardworking individual who enjoyed reading, socializing, singing and writing, even publishing her first poem “A Loyal Friend” in the Forward Times. A trailblazer in her own right, she made it her life’s mission to master a variety of skills that clearly defined her exceptional leadership qualities. She had a passion for service and volunteered with the Adult Literacy Foundation. Elaine was also a proud member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority Incorporated.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; six siblings, Versie Foreman, Vermon Lacy Sr., Valda Lewis, JD Robinson, & Mayetta Bryant. Left behind in God’s care and to cherish her loving memory: Jesse Lewis (husband), four children, Sherelle Glasper (Voris), Jesse Lewis Jr., Cedric Lewis, Jamaal Lewis, all of Houston. Two siblings, Obie Lacy (Barbra), Obelia Pratt, and eight in-laws, S.T. Lewis, Jerry Lewis (Cynthia), Nat Lewis, Rondelle Lewis (Maxine), Jonas Lewis, Faye Williams, Alma Wynn (Marvin) and Annie Marshall. Three grandchildren, Jarrett, Trevon (Ashley) and Valondra, two great grandchildren, Kingston, and Andre.
