

Carrie Mae Kornbacher, was born January 12, 1929 in St. Landry Parish in the city of Opelousas, Louisiana to Freddie and Josephine Kornbacher. She graduated from Central High School, the high school for African Americans in Galveston, Texas. There she worked at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston in her early adult life. She married John Mavis, to that union three children were born: Eric John Tubby', Carolyn Ann Peaches', and Alane Lynn'. In 1963, she married Rev. Q. C. Foster, Sr. and joined Trinity Baptist Church in Galveston where he was Pastor. The family moved to The Third Ward in Houston, Texas. Rev. Foster began to pastor Greater Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in the Studewood community. They served Greater Mt. Olive from 1963 to 1982, until Rev. Foster passed away. To this union two sons were born: John Fitzgerald and Quinton Chad. While at Greater Mt. Olive she served in many teaching roles in the Sunday School, Baptist Training Union and Vacation Bible School. She also attended Mission and Prayer meeting. Carrie joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in 1982 under Pastor F.N. Williams, Sr. after her husband passed. She joined Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in 2005 under Pastor John F. Foster, Sr. and joined St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in 2012 under Dr. Stanley T. Hillard. She retired from the University of Texas Dental School Branch in 1995 after 23 years of service. After retirement she cherised the moments she spent nurturing children and supporting working mothers/families. She enjoyed caring for others, watching out for her Saunders Rd. neighbors, daily watching her soap operas and conversations with good friends. She was affectionately known as "Mama Lady, Mrs. Carrie, Ms. C, Granny and Mama Foster." Carrie leaves to cherish the fond memories, five children: Eric (Andrea) Mavis, Carolyn (Ben) Anderson, Alane (Rev. Reginald) Lillie, Rev. John (Anita) Foster, and Rev. Quinton (Kristie) Foster; sixteen grandchildren: Derrick, Ebony, Kareem (Stephanie), Hasina, Tiffany, Mahdi, Kimberly, Reginald II, John II (Noel), Stephan (Rashonner), Marcedes (Bobby), Bradford "BK", Keara (Dallas), Neely Simone, Arissa, and Quince. She also has thirteen great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
