Darryl was drafted into the NAVY while he was in high school, during the Vietnam War. He was stationed on the USS Wood County (LST-1178) where he was a plank owner and the USS Harlan County (LST-1196) as a BM3. He was trained as an Assault Boat Coxswain and was the only sailor entrusted to transport the captain from the ship to land. After serving four years, Mr. Smith was discharged honorably.
He then became employed with Mustang Tractor, working on highway construction, Abrams & Granite, and with Cemex until retirement.
In his leisure time, Darryl enjoyed spending time with his family in a variety of ways including taking his grandchildren to museums, the zoo, and parks. His most treasured time was spent teaching his grandchildren how to fish. He also enjoyed watching planes at Ellington Field, attending air shows, and camping. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his loving wife.
He always had a heart for helping others, especially with those less fortunate than he.
