From a young age, David knew his calling was to help others through dentistry. Even as a preteen, he dreamed of bringing joy to people through their smiles. He pursued that passion at the University of Texas Dental School and went on to practice dentistry in Houston for over 50 years, touching countless lives with his gentle care and expertise.
David served his country in the United States Navy during the 1960s, a period of service he carried with quiet pride throughout his life.
Family was important to David, and he enjoyed time spent with loved ones, whether gathering during the holidays, sharing an ordinary day together, or engaging in his favorite pastime of playing games. He treasured his monthly poker game with lifelong high school friends, a tradition they maintained for over 50 years.
He was an avid traveler with an insatiable curiosity about the world, visiting dozens of countries and enjoying countless cruises, always returning home with stories and treasured memories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Ray William Smith and Doris Jean Smith, and his brothers Dennis and Doug Smith.
He is survived by his brother, Don Smith and his wife Cynay; his sister-in-law, Audrey Smith; his former wife Judy Smith and their children, daughter Kimberly Ury and her husband Chris Scott; his son, Derrol Smith and his wife Anna Wehl; his beloved grandchildren, Johnathan Ury, Shelby Ury, Austin Smith, Savannah Smith, and Berkeley Smith; and his great grandson, Brody Ury, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Dental Lifeline Network, an organization providing life changing dental care to vulnerable adults. Donations may be made online at https://dentallifeline.org/
