Delores (Dee) Ann Sorrick was born on October 4th, 1933, in Irving, Kansas and passed away January 16, 2025, at the age of 91. She was the daughter of George Joseph and Helen Mildred Stritesky. Dee loved music and started taking piano lessons at age 5 until age 20, then switched to pipe organ and voice. After graduating from Blue Rapids High School in 1951, Dee attended and graduated in 1955 from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor in Music Education. While attending the University of Kansas, she met the love of her life, Jerry Sorrick, and they were married in July 1955. They were married 68 years until Jerry passed away in August 2023.
Dee’s business career spanned several fields: music teacher, an actuarial clerk for Travelers, an accounting and personnel clerk at a bank, and an operations banking officer. The couple first settled in Wichita, Kansas and she worked at Union National Bank. In 1966, Dee and Jerry transferred to Travelers Insurance corporate office in Hartford, Connecticut. Delores also worked with Travelers Insurance and was a proud member of Travelers Chorale, the oldest company-affiliated, eight-part choral group in America. In 1969, Dee and Jerry moved to Houston where she worked for the Bank of the Southwest until she took early retirement in the late 1980’s. Dee and Jerry loved to travel the world together visiting over 60 countries and touring historical cities, enjoying birding, and observing nature in the wild. They were also avid boaters in Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico during their time together.
After retirement Delores became an active volunteer working many years with the Houston Zoo, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Houston Audubon Society’s Edith Moore Sanctuary, Moody Gardens in Galveston, and Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS). In 2007, Dee was awarded the “Docent of the Year” by the Houston Zoo. Memorial donations for the Houston Zoo may be made at https://p2p.onecause.com/hzisorrick/donate. She is also in the Docent Hall of Fame at Moody Gardens. And if that was not enough, Dee enjoyed taking puppies to visit residents in Houston area nursing homes.
Delores is survived by her sister, Sharon DeShazer, Hutchinson Kansas, and six nieces and nephews in Houston and Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, and her father and mother, George and Helen Stritesky.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation in the name of Delores Sorrick to one of the organizations that she volunteered for mentioned above.
A celebration of life for Dee will be held on Tuesday January 28, 2025 at 2:00pm at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Rd., Houston, Texas 77055.
