Donald Scott Edwards, 84, passed away on February 25, 2024, in Pearland Texas. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Don had touched throughout his life. Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, and teacher to many.
Don was born in Houston, Texas on Christmas Eve in 1939 to Chester and Corene Edwards of Galena Park, Texas. Don graduated from the University of Texas with a teaching degree and boy could he teach! A teacher of Texas history, economics, and government mainly at Deer Park High School, Don enraptured and motivated his students to learn more about our country and themselves. Known as ‘Mr. Ed’, Don would work on lessons that stuck with students and helped them remember key facts or concepts. No concept was too corny or beneath him to try to reach all his students. His children can attest he worked late at home making school materials for class, and talked at the dinner table daily about his lessons and his students. It was not uncommon for his family to listen to future lesson plans at the dinner table. As Don explained one time, “If I held the kids’ interest about a certain topic until dessert, I knew I had a winner! I could then proceed with it in the classroom.”
Later in his career, Don became assistant principal at Deer Park High School and even taught history classes at San Jacinto College and Lone Star College in the evenings. He enjoyed being an educator, and even when he was no longer in the classroom, he still was an advocate for students, parents, and later faculty.
Don never met a stranger, and he could spin a yarn! His engaging stories of his early years would leave his family and friends in stiches and beg for more. His art of storytelling was a reason he could captivate a classroom and at home was no different. To tell someone how they broke their nose in high school gym should take 1 minute for most people, and it wasn’t very interesting. That was not Don. After 5 minutes you were hooked and stayed for the full 15 minutes to hear the entire story that left you laughing and a big smile on your face! His compassion, humility, and integrity were characteristics that even now his children are grateful to have witnessed, as well as proud to live on as his legacy.
Besides telling tales and making people feel at ease, his other hobbies included wood-working, singing in his church choir, playing 42 and Train, cabinetry, and reading books (and not from a Kindle!). Don was a huge University of Texas football fan which wasn’t always easy since he was in a mixed SEC/Big 12 marriage as his wife and in-law relatives were devoted Arkansas Razorback fans.
Don was (and is) a Christian who taught his family values and how to live Christ-focused in today’s times. A member of the United Methodist church, he held memberships at Galena Park, Deer Park, Willis, Montgomery, Manchaca, the Woodlands, and Dickinson First. Don held many leadership positions but singing in the choir and chairing the Building Committee at Deer Park, as well as becoming the Willis choir director, were a few of his favorites. His family is forever grateful for the role model Don played in their lives, and there is not enough space to write about his devotion, commitment, and service to Christ Jesus.
Don is preceded in death by his father, Chester Cooper Edwards, his mother Corene (Harper) Edwards, his elder brother Jerry Edwards, and his brothers-in-law Travis Yingling and Clifton Sheridan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Liz), and four children: Terri Edwards Bubb (husband Jack), Andy (Drew) Edwards (wife Lesa), Karen Elizabeth Helms, Kate Walters (husband Terry) as well as his grandchildren: Lindsey Kuhl (husband Justin), Lauren Edwards (husband Adam Ramirez), Landri Edwards, Allison Helms (wife Taylor), and Zachary Walters; great-grandsons Easton Kuhl, Kase Kuhl, and Jackson Rider; great-granddaughter Tyler Kuhl (arriving soon); sisters-in-law Jan Sheridan, Brenda LaBee (husband Butch), Edna Yingling, and Julie Edwards as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of life service will be held on Monday March 04, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Dickinson First United Methodist Church located at 200 FM 517 in Dickinson, Texas with visitation at 10:00 a.m. before the service. A graveside service will immediately follow at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston, Texas.
