Born on December 5, 1928 to Alvin and Martha (Moerbe) Knippa, in Loebau, TX., she was baptized as an infant and confirmed in her youth at Christ Lutheran Church. She spent her early years helping work the family farm.
Elma married Edwin Schatte on August 22, 1948 and moved to Houston, where they raised their four children. She worked for Schlumberger and Knigge Automotive. Married for 57 years, she was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, aunt and cousin. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, homemaking and crafts. Along with her husband she worked faithfully in missions, volunteering and the choir at Bethany Lutheran. She was a Cub Scout leader, member of Lutheran Layman’s League and Lutheran Outdoors Ministry of Texas. Both were very active in their community Civic Club and enjoyed creating Schatte Meat Seasoning and BBQ Sauce.
Elma never met a stranger. She had a genuine ready smile for everyone, loved to laugh, welcomed everyone to her home, loved unconditionally, could relate to all walks of life, was a kind soul, Champion Wii bowler, loved music and gardening and was a great dancer. Her deep faith in her Lord sustained her throughout her life.
Elma was preceded in death by her parents, son Paul, granddaughter Michelle Mitchell, brothers Arthur, Luke, William, Isadore, Erich and their wives, sister Hildegard and her husband. She is survived by her children Kathryn and Travis Rice, Barbara and Michael Mitchell, Shelly Schatte, Mark Schatte and their children, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchild, her sister Lillian (Melvin) Hohle, brother-in-law Herman Gersch and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank her many caregivers from Village on the Park and Love On Em for their kind and gentle care during her last years.
