Emma T. Carter was born October 22, 1933 in Kohrville, Texas to parents of Isaiah Carter and Lottie Ruby Martin Carter. She was the third oldest of eight siblings. Emma accepted Christ at an early age at Pilgrim Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Kohrville, Texas. On March 9, 1953, Emma was united in Holy Matrimony to June Arthur Johnson. They were married for 41 years. To this union, one child was born; Cherlyn Anitra Johnson. Upon completion of high school, Emma received several vocational licenses; as a Hairstylist and a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). She worked as a hairstylist for many years, and then decided to pursue a degree in Nursing. On May 14, 1982, she accomplished her goal of becoming an LVN as she marched across the stage to accept her degree from Houston Community College. She worked at numerous Nursing Homes throughout her career as a nurse. As a couple, Emma and Arthur joined Northside Antioch Baptist Church, where they remained until their transition. Prior to her health declining, she faithfully served in many capacities within the ministry. Some of various ministries consisted of the Usher Board, Children’s Nursery, and the Benevolence Board. One of her most joyous positions consisted of serving as the church secretary; under the leadership of Reverend Robert Staggers. Emma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter. Also preceding were her siblings: Artis, Isaiah, David, Louis, Titus, Shirley Jean, and Hattie Pearl. Emma leaves to cherish her memories a host of nieces, nephews, church family, and caring friends.
