Esther Wood Estes passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning hours of Friday, June 3, 2011. She is now rejoicing with those loved ones who have gone before her, especially her dear husband, Charlie. Esther was born on August 8, 1924, in Baltimore, MD, the oldest child of Rev. Enoch and Ruth Nelson Wood. In 1941, she met a handsome soldier from Texas who came to visit her father’s church, and after they married in 1945, they made their home in Houston. Esther worked for many years as a secretary for various labor unions in the city. She also used her secretarial skills in different churches and served as secretary/treasurer of HCFWSD #45 in her neighborhood. She enjoyed gardening and cooking and was blessed with the gift of hospitality. She and Charles served faithfully for many years at Northside Assembly of God, Glen Oaks Assembly of God, Evangelistic Temple and Healing Waters Fellowship. She will always be remembered for her quick wit and good sense of humor, but mostly as a woman who loved God and wanted to serve Him in everything she did. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Ruthie, brothers Paul T. Wood and wife Lenora of Parsonsburg, MD Rev. William H Wood and wife Ann of Stephens City, VA, faithful friend Ron Towe, many other relatives and a host of friends. Visitation will be held on Monday 5-8 at Earthman Resthaven, and funeral services will be held at Earthman Resthaven on Tuesday, June 7, at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. Darrell Nunley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations made to the First Choice Ministries of First Methodist Houston, 1320 Main, Houston, TX 77002 or the charity of your choice.
