Gilbert Sepeda Blanco, (91) peacefully went into the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on July 20, 2024 with his family lovingly by his side. Born October 3, 1932 and raised in the Wharton, Texas area with his 12 siblings, Gilbert sought to enlist in the United States Air Force immediately after high school. After medical discharge, he found his calling in the health services field as a Respiratory Therapist and fulfilled his career aspirations at Hermann Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital in the Houston Medical Center. His work ethic and dedication were demonstrated during Hurricane Carla when a fallen tree blocked the front door of his home, Gilbert traversed the debris and braved the extreme weather to catch the bus and reach his patients.
Gilbert’s life was a testament to faith, family, commitment, and service to his community; these were the cornerstone values that guided him. Blessed with a marriage of 68 years, he is survived by his loving wife, Elvira Gonzales Blanco. Their enduring union leaves a legacy of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and countless lifelong friends who celebrate his love and friendship. Though strong-willed and stubborn at times, Gilbert also had a joyful heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous with his time, loyal to his friends, and dedicated to his church.
For over 20 years, Gilbert volunteered his weekends at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church as a liturgist, usher, and active congregant. A longtime friend to Father Tom, he spent innumerable hours helping prepare the church to host baptisms, quinceañeras, weddings and other events. Gilbert’s bright blue Tahoe always parked just outside the church doors, and his steady, quiet presence a comfort to many during their times of joy and sorrow.
Gilbert also found happiness in the simple pleasantries of life, like enjoying an orange dreamsicle while sitting outside on his porch, Cracker Jack caramel popcorn to sweeten the evening news, or Sunday lunch at Cleburne’s cafe. Often surrounded by pets who adored him, he was a frequent sight around the neighborhood walking his longtime canine companion, Ginger. His compassion was evident in the way he cared for animals, from putting ice in their water bowls, to bringing the local stray cats in to sleep in the garage during rainy nights. Gilbert was a true steward of goodwill for man and animal.
Gilbert Sepeda Blanco will be remembered for all the ways he shared with his friends and family. He loved each of them dearly, and when his time came, he carried himself with dignity, strength, and love for those who went before him. He will be deeply missed by his family, numerous friends, and the community he touched with his warmth and wit. His memoirs are written on the hearts of those he leaves behind.
