Gilbert M. Smith Jr.

Gilbert M. Smith, Jr. entered into eternal rest on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 66 years of age. Beloved husband of Mercedes W. Smith. Father of Angele Smith-VonDerPool, Gilbert M. Smith, III and Dwana Terese Smith. He leaves to cherish his memories, Ericka Hampton. Devoted grandfather of Mekele, Jeffery, Ryan, Cameron, Kyla, Kodi, Madison and Kyle. Loving brother of Lynnell Smith-Parent (Ronald). Brother-in-law of Harold Williams, Rosemary Williams-Rose and Louise Williams. Uncle of Shanda and Carl Watts, Derrick, David and Christian Parent. He leaves to mourn his passing a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was a special friend of Jim and Tami Andrews. Preceded in death by his parents; Gilbert M. Smith, Sr. and Hazel Legaux Smith, his sister; Deidra Smith Watts and niece; Toya M. Parent. Thanks to Dr. Badu and his Medical Staff at the Houston Veterans Administration Hospital. Gilbert was 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Marine Corps, who served in the Vietnam War and retired U.S. Postal Service employee. He was a native of New Orleans and following Hurricane Katrina relocated to Rosharon, Texas. He will always be loved and remembered by all who knew him. Relatives and friends of the family and employees of M.D. Anderson Emergency Center are invited to attend the funeral. Services to be held at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home located at 13102 North Freeway Houston, Texas 77060, viewing on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 from 3-5pm. Visitation Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 from 11:30-1:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial begins 1:00pm. Interment at Houston National Cemetery/Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr. 77038. Memorial Service to be held in New Orleans, on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 at Our Lady of Guadalupe/Shrine of St. Jude located at 411 S. Rampart St. services begin at 10am.
