Jerry, My Friend
            Sure am going to miss you. Sure wish we could have had more time together these last 50 years. But that was not to be. Rest in Peace my friend, till we meet again

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.  May your memories bring you comfort.

A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to   
  Leave the examination room and said,   
  'Doctor, I am afraid to die.   
  Tell me what lies on the other side.'   
  
Very quietly, the doctor said, 'I don't know..'   
  'You don't know?  You're, a Christian man,   
  and don't know what's on the other side?'   
  
  The doctor was holding the handle of the door;   
  On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining,   
  And as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room   
  And leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.   
  
Turning to the patient, the doctor said,   
  'Did you notice my dog?   
  He's never been in this room before.   
  He didn't know what was inside.   
  He knew nothing except that his master was here,   
  And when the door opened,  he sprang in without fear.   
  I know little of what is on the other side of death,   
  But I do know one thing...   
  
I know my Master is there and that is enough.'  

One last e mail will miss all of yours

Jerry, say hello to my boys and tell them stories of when we were young and silly. Tell them about our race from Pennsboro. Maybe about your boat with a windshield. Tell Steven about going to the Spot to get hot dogs for his mother's cravings. Or about our fights over OUR car, and the brakes. There were a lot of memories with you and I smile now thinking back on them and you. May God bless and keep those you loved and who loved you.

My heart breaks at the loss of an old friend, but I have lots of fond and happy memories I will cherish.

Thank you Vaughn for all the wonderful memories. Your sense of humor, warm heart, kindness, thoughtfulness, and determination to live will be greatly missed. I will never forget all those special occasions we spent together, the times you cheered me on from the sidelines of the Houston marathons, the Thanksgiving dinners, and especially your favorite time of year, Christmas. We are so very grateful to Thanh to have worked so faithfully in helping us get Jerry to our 50th class reunion in 2008. And also 2009. Even when Jerry had been so ill,he seemed, with Thanhs'help, to have had a miracle recovery and had a great trip to the 51st reunion.Thanh, I know that you enjoyed seeing Jerrys' happiness at these reunions as much as he enjoyed re-uniting with a lot of his "Class of '59".We will miss Jerry at the next reunion. But consider you,Thanh, an honorary member of the Class of '59.
I will miss Jerrys' daily phone calls: So Thahn you must carry on the tradition! We loved Jerry. And we love you.May we all be together one day.

Jerry, we only went thru the the sixth grade together but have lots of memories of our time in Harrisville. I am so glad I got to see and visit with you at the last two reunions. Maybe we will meet again someday.

I'll always remember the good times. So glad that I got to see you at our fifty first reunion.

You held a special place in my heart from the play sand box in first grade through our fifty first class reunion this year. So thankful we were reunited with our Jerry after so many years. You will be missed, and always loved, dear ole friend.

As another of those who spent twelve years with Jerry in the schools of Harrisville WV,  we'll surely miss you at our next reunion. Having lost touch with you over the years, I was so happy to see you at last again at our fiftieth and this year also.  Thanks Thanh for seeing that he got there. Jerry, we were 2 of about a dozen of us who shared the first 12 yrs of our education together at Harrisville..
So glad I got to see you at the 50th HHS reunion.
After reading your obituary,you seemed to have had a rich,full life. You are now at peace. Sue

Jerry it seems like eons ago that we were in school together.  We are cousins on my mothers side.  Rest in peace.

Though distance kept us apart, you were always family Uncle Jerry. I am grateful for the moments we did have together and wish we had more of them. The suffering of this life will help guide you in the next. I hope you have found peace.

I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to have spent time with you last Christmas. Thank you for your love, your humor, and your service to America. We will miss you, Uncle Jerry.

I will miss his humorous emails and the time spent working together at the VA.  May our hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as we celebrate a life well lived.  We will cherish the memories forever.  Please accept my deepest sympathies

We will miss you Jerry. Didn't get to know you personally as we went different paths when we grew up. Our Mom and your Dad were brothers and sisters. There is an empty seat at Dirk's Coffee Shop tonight...

After a chance meeting a decade ago at the Crossroads coffee shop in the Montrose district of Houston Texas I developed an excellent friendship with a true southern gentleman.  As time went on and I ultimately moved to Houston we had a daily meeting, always at 6:45pm, at the Lobo's coffee shop until it closed and we took up residence at Diedrich Coffee (recently renamed Dirk's).  I can still see Vaughn in the same seat every night, neatly dressed with that district attorney (DA) haircut layered in Brill cream.  As a group of friends (Gus, Michael and Brian) we would share stories, discuss politics and (secretly) admire the sites.  In later years at Diedrich, we still shared stories with an extended group of friends (Ted, Ray, Hopes (Arthur) and Neil).  
 
After moving back to Toronto in 2004, Vaughn often invited me to stay at his home during my frequent visits to Houston.  Vaughn and Thanh always rolled out the red carpet for me.  Vaughn waited patiently inside the house as I conducted my shifts (shifts = 2 hours of sun tanning) by his backyard pool.  Vaughn always had the television volume at about 100 decibels, so that I could not miss any quality TV.  We would often stay up too late watching reality cop shows, a personal favourite of Vaughn's, as I drank brown pops (Bud) on his sofa. I put up with Vaughn's endless questions about how to use his PC and spent days removing viruses and trying to speed-up his system.  My repayment was at least six junk emails from Vaughn every single day.  He also put up with my endless shopping sprees and would even come along on black Fridays (day after Thanksgiving), complete with oxygen tanks and handicapped sticker on his Honda CRV truck to let me avoid the difficult parking and long lines to get in the stores.  I remember a special case at Conn's where the sales staff told us to go directly to the cash and they would bring my new GPS to avoid having Vaughn standing in line any longer.
 
The most astonished look on Vaughn's face I ever saw was the day Brian and I caught him smoking, oxygen tank at his side, at Inversions Coffee shop.  He had no idea we were sitting quietly chatting at the next table.  I guess I just broke a promise to Vaughn, since now, Thanh knows.
 
Vaughn would always have a small coffee and ice water.  He saved is Diedrich frequent buyer card stamps all year long, so that I never paid for my nightly (extra large) Cappuccino at Dietrich when I visited from Toronto.  We shared many greats stories, jokes and yarns.  I listened intently to war stories and chimed in with my 'northern' opinion on those difficult subjects (but I was declared a honorary southerner).  Vaughn often included me as a military veteran as he introduced the group of us to strangers in the coffee shop.  I am only a veteran of 31 years of computer consulting.  Vaughn was quiet most of the time during our heated discussions, but when he spoke up, the boisterous chatter would abruptly stop so that everyone could hear what he had to say.  
 
 
Vaughn, save me a seat at the Dirk's branch in heaven.  Someday, I will come and sit beside you like we have done so many times.  I will stop by the Empire cafe and pick us up one of those gigantic slices of chocolate cake to share.  And yes, we won't tell Thanh.  
 
On Thursday night I spoke with Vaughn for the last time in his hospital bed.  Vaughn and I spoke almost daily (some times at length, other times just for a few minutes) on the telephone for the past four years.  Apparently, he had been quiet all day but managed to just say hello to me on the phone.  I, being very uncomfortable and not knowing what to say, whispered 'I have been thinking about you Vaughn and I love you'.  My last words to a true gentle man.
