

John D Morris was born on December 13, 1934 in Opp, Alabama to D.D. and Ida Pope Morris. He graduated from Lakeland High School in Lakeland, Florida. He was married to the former Katherine LaFaso and was a member of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Houston.
John served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, serving one tour of duty in Korea with the Eighth Army Signal Corp. Majority of stateside duty was with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC being honorably discharged in 1963.
He joined the 143rd Airborne Battalion of the Texas National Guard in 1978. Served two years being honorably discharged in 1980.
John retired and was the former business owner and operator of Southcoast Roofing Corporation in Houston, Texas.
John was a member of The American Legion Post 594 in Houston Texas. Awarded a Life Membership in 1974 and obtained the office of National Vice Commander in 1999. He was currently serving on the National Convention Commission as Vice Chairman.
John’s other affiliations are he was a member and Past Chef de Gare 40/8 Voiture 163. Past President Gavel Club of Texas. He helped to form and served as first President of the National Cemetery Council of greater Houston. Officer and treasurer for Sarah Jane Falligant Foundation for 37 years.
John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years of marriage, Katherine; daughters, Wanda Duhon and husband Jerry, Patricia Haake, Gail Elliott and husband Tim, Marie Morris, Cheryl Murphy, Donna Dillard and husband Paul; sons, John Morris, Jr. and Frank Derr as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 from 5-9 PM with the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 10:00 AM in the Grand Chapel of Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery with Army Honors.
