Joyce Largent Hood, 83, passed away January 13, 2013 in Houston, Texas. She was born March 23, 1929 in Lufkin, Texas to Bailey W. Largent and Bertha M. Green. She is preceded in death by her parents, stepmother Zelma Largent, and half brothers Wayne, Thomas and Michael Largent. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Willard S. Hood and their children Carol Schumacher, Willard, Jr. (Bill), Robert (Robin), Stephen, and wife Sdenka, all of Houston and Nancy Warrick of Katy; grandchildren Sarah, and husband Thomas Way, Christopher Crass, Nikolai and Talya Hood, Alexandra (Allie) Jenkins and Andrew and Adam Warrick; great grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Way; and her half sister Patti and husband Felix Beasley of Lufkin, and half brother Harry (Hal) Largent of Lufkin, Texas.
Joyce had a thirst for knowledge and held multiple degrees in education and psychology. She attended the University of Texas, University of Houston main campus and Clear Lake, and Texas A & M University. She most enjoyed her time in the ‘rat lab’ at Clear Lake while pursuing her Master of Science in psychology. Her research interests included dreams and left-handedness. She was a teacher and later a school diagnostician for Houston and Alief independent school districts. Intellectually curious, she read widely and was truly a wise woman of letters.
She liked reading murder mysteries and traveling and especially loved her cats. She will be remembered for her seemingly infinite wellspring of energy and drive, her extraordinary generosity which had no limits, and most fondly for her gifted sense of humor, even when times were tough. She would say, life is short, but very wide.
‘And you’re the only constant in the changing and the mess,
You shine on eternal beneath our consciousness.’
The family appreciates the excellent care she received from West Oaks Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and A-Med Hospice.
The memorial service will be Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road, Houston, Texas.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Salvation Army.
