She was the oldest of six siblings, including Joe, Beatrice, Earnest, Jesse, and Blanche. She met her first husband, Pedro Salinas, in high school during a 9th grade dance that turned into a roller-skating trip that she and Beatrice attended in full-length ball gowns with skates, having hailed a taxi from the dance! After marrying, they moved to Houston and began their family of six with children Peter, Sylvia, Larry, and Robert. Lydia studied cosmetology and worked at the Downtown Houston Foley's. After leaving Foley's, she worked as a teacher’s aide and crossing guard. Lydia later married Gerald Suib, and they traveled often, visiting places such as Monte Carlo, Spain, England, Australia, and Israel.
While time and age worked against her, Lydia truly owned her last days, making sure that everyone knew her wishes, and knew how much they were loved, doling out smiles and hand clasps and being true to herself right until the last moment. She was an original matriarch who collected people within her family circle, whether by blood or love, and one always knew where they stood with Grandma.
Lydia is survived by her sister Blanche, daughter Sylvia, son Robert, grandchildren Ferney Echeverry, Sonja Salinas-Severin, Peter Salinas, and Alex Salinas, great-grandchildren Julian Singleton, Kelsey Echeverry, Kaitlin McMullan, Camryn McMullan-Echeverry and great-great-grandson Santana Singleton.
A celebration of life for Lydia will be held Monday, October 6, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023.
